Lacey is a city in Washington that is part of Thurston County. The city was originally known as Woodland, when Isaac and Catherine Wood first claimed land in the area. The new name was chosen in 1891, when the community needed a post office and had to find a name that wasn't already taken. Lacey was chosen for the local Justice of Peace, O.C. Lacey.

This was our first session. The student has a quiz tomorrow, so we mostly covered the stuff that will be on that, which was polynomial functions. We started with polynomial long division, but he had pretty solid mastery of that, so we moved on to binomial expansion using Pascal's triangle. After explaining the basic idea--how to make Pascal's triangle and what the expansion formula is--the student was able to complete a moderately-difficult example on his own! So that's solid. Finally, we moved on to the meat of the lesson, which were multi-part problems involving graphing various aspects of a polynomial equation. We worked slowly through an easy version of this problem type, then I let the student do another one on his own. He made a number of mistakes, but was able to fix them and complete the problem. He's a great student. He's very receptive and eager to learn, and his math fundamentals (algebra, arithmetic, etc.) are pretty solid. He easily and quickly is able to correct his mistakes and understand what he has to change in his approach. For many math students, the core fundamentals are poor, and that can only be fixed by practice. The student is not in that situation. So long as he stays on top of his assigned homework and asks questions early and often (of both me and his teacher), I feel confident about his future performance in this class!

The student has started working on the last unit of her Pre-Calc class--sequences and series. We reviewed her homework problems together. We worked on a few together on the board as well, just to make sure she completely understood it.

Today was a basic review of the summer homework as school starts next week. We went over selected problems from the student's math packet so that she could review the concepts of combining like terms and factoring with different methods. She was a little shaky at first but picked up more at faster rates as we went on.

We went over multiplication and placing the decimal correctly. Then we tried to divide with moving the decimal. I have divulged the student's learning style and have changed my approach to teach her accordingly. We seem to be making wonderful progress now! I look forward to my sessions with her!

We worked on standard and expanded form - which the student did a wonderful job with. She seems to find it much easier today than prior lessons. In addition, we worked on 3-digit addition and subtraction problems. I had her play the teacher and explain to me how she solved the problems. This was a little harder for her, as she seems to know how to do the problems but not the why behind them. We will continue to work on this difficult concept. To end the lesson, we read a short poem and answered some comprehension questions about it. We also discussed how poems should be read and read again to become fluent.

We covered the multiple choice answer system of AP US History, specifically concerning the 19th century, including the Great Awakening, transcendentalist ideas, and reform of the period. The student understands the material and thinks through problems well. She struggles picking the "most correct answer" because the questions and answers are purposefully written subjectively. We will continue to work on these types of questions.
