Tutoring review by Adriana in Coalville, UT
The student did his homework and I guided him, corrected, and answered any questions. Since his test got postponed for February 1; I tested him on all the aspects of the subjunctive, such as uses, how to identify it, conjugations, and subject/verb agreement. We also studied vocabulary from page 201, and he reviewed it. Finally, he wrote some sentences using WEIRDO, and the subjunctive tense. He seemed to have a better understanding, however, I recommend that learn all the verbs that can be used in the first clause.

The student worked on his homework assignments dealing with testing claims using confidence intervals and z scores. This assignment also had components of null hypothesis significance testing which we also discussed in depth. We did a lot of review of terminology and practice with these concepts. Null hypothesis testing in particular we spent a lot of time on. It's a confusing and sometimes counter-intuitive statistical concept so full understanding is absolutely essential since it will appear in all of the following chapters for the rest of his class. Towards the end of the session he really started to put it all together.

Tutoring review by Jessica in Coalville, UT
Today the student asked me to work with him on reviewing a variety of problems, including multiplying decimals, algebraic equations, and angles. When multiplying two decimals (ex 1.34 * .656), the student did not know where to put the decimal point. I taught him to count the numbers after the decimal and have the same number of numbers after the decimal in the answer. We will need to review this in a future session to make sure that it sticks. He is very smart and good at mental math, but because of this, sometimes he rushes and takes shortcuts and makes minor arithmetic mistakes. So while we were working on the problems, we worked on slowing down, remembering to check the signs, and checking our work. When the student slowed down and worked more carefully, he made fewer mistakes. When solving arithmetic problems, he sometimes had trouble figuring out what to do when there is a variable on both sides of the equation (ex: x + 5 = 6x). We will work more on problems like this in a future session until he gets the hang of it.

We worked on four topics last night: Change Due, Price Lists, Unit Prices, and Calculating Percentages. The website was a great help and we spent the session working problems from those topics. We did 14 problems in Change Due, 14 in Price Lists, 6 in Unit Price, and 3 in calculating percentages. For the most part, the student did not have trouble solving the problems.

Saturday the student took the SAT so yesterday we focused on her math studies class and the ACT. In her class she needs to go over how to use the graphing calculator. I wrote down some actions she would need to know for the next section but I advised her to meet with her teacher about the other function. We also went over some practice ACT questions and I will send her some other ones to do for practice.
