Session Summaries by Tutors
During today's session we covered long division. I showed the student the standard algorithm for solving long division problems. He showed me a strategy his teachers have shown him to solve long division problems and was very confident in completing each problem. I gave him tips on how to multiply by counting on instead of always starting at 1. I left him with a page of multiplication practice and we will continue practicing his fluency in multiplication facts to help him master division with ease.

We worked on finding the missing side of shapes using trig properties. He is great at identifying which trig property to use and in understanding the big picture. We will work on rationalizing radicals and solving common trig values without a calculator. I gave him a study sheet to work on these.

We covered lines (slopes and how to find them graphically and algebraically, slope-intercept form, point-slope form, and perpendicular lines), and ventured a little into more general graph transformations (the logic behind point-slope form), which was a lot to handle at once but will become clearer with time. I think the student got a lot more comfortable with equations for lines, and I gave him a handy flow-chart for what information is important in a question, and what to do with it to find the desired equation.

During the first hour, we went over more SAT problems I gave her. I noticed that she studied the concepts I left her for homework. She was more prepared today that the first session. During the second hour she asked me to go through problems she could not solve from her study guide. We will meet tomorrow for two more hours.

The student came prepared with a review packet for an upcoming test (in a couple weeks). It covered conic sections, including circles, parabolas, ellipses, and hyperbolas. In addition to the distance and midpoint formulas, she worked through half the problems after we went over a few of the concepts first. She did well. We cleared up and cemented some things.

The student is working with ratios in math: reading word problems, identifying the ratio relationships, simplifying them. She is also working with coordinate graphs; she produced 4 with coordinate pairs we created. She showed me her PowerPoint project, which was a summary of picture/ text nonfiction booklet on different types of animal eaters--she had made a great PowerPoint; we edited the slides for small errors and I encouraged her to bring out specific points, strong verbs, and facts. She is an independent soul, and applied some of this advice. Last we worked on math multiplication facts. I intend to insert more math in session with her.
