I am an undergraduate student at Johns Hopkins University. I am working towards degrees in Molecular and Cellular Biology, BS and Public Health Studies, BA. In the past, I have regularly tutored algebra, precalculus, and calculus students through my school's tutoring program and have a lot of experience tutoring middle and high school students. Math intrigues me and I love to see the excitement in a student's eyes when a concept is finally made clear, and they can reproduce it. I am a patient person, and have accumulated such patience from my years of work as a badminton coach working with students of all age groups and my experience volunteering in doctors' offices and hospitals.

With a firm base of almost 40 years, I have taught, tutored, explored, translated, interpreted the Spanish and English languages along with the cultures associated with them. My joy comes from the study of linguistics which is like a science game piecing all the parts of the language into one larger section. Since any language is forever changing, based on the needs of the people who use it, it is a dynamic study - one which you never grow weary of studying. I have taught Pre-K up through Undergraduate and Post-Graduate but always seek students who are eager to learn. And if you only require improvement of your understanding, I believe my enthusiasm will be contagious! I have worked for other tutoring companies, taught at Michigan State University - Undergraduate Spanish and Portuguese, all levels of elementary through high school, have developed my own curriculum for all levels and have taught home-schooled groups. I lived in Brazil for a year with an American Field Service scholarship program with a Brazilian family in Sao Paulo. I have also traveled through Mexico. I have lived in Hawaii and lived in five states and passed through many more. As you can see, I have enjoyed traveling. I am proud to have graduated with a B.S. from Georgetown University in Languages and Linguistics. My tutoring style is one where I try to adapt to the interests and personality of the student. My outside interests (although related) include studies of the early Spanish explorers into South America and into the worlds of the Incan and Mayan Empires. I also love pets and all animals.

Education is the corner stone to success and a life where you can obtain a career that doesn't feel like work. My name is Malik Laidlaw and from my beginning stages of school I vowed to pursue the life of an educator because I knew from an early age that a student can only become as good as the teacher motivates them to be. I stand for understanding, simply because you wouldn't leave an artist to paint if the artist didn't understand the purpose of a brush.

I graduated from the University of Central Florida with a Master's of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction as well as an additional 18 credit hours in English Literature. My Bachelor's in Journalism is from Brigham Young University. I enjoy tutoring composition, literature, and ACT/SAT prep focusing on the critical reading and writing portions of the exams, including grammar and addressing the logic and argument development required for the "new" essay. I have taught in schools where the students live in poverty and tutored students who attended prestigious private schools such as Georgetown Prep and Sidwell Friends. I also have experience helping ESL students though I do not hold ESL certification. I believe it is not possible for a person to reach his or her potential without not only an education but also without having the skills and curiosity needed to become a life-long learner. I love helping students gain understanding and confidence. I am a life-long learner myself, currently learning French, drawing, and mixed media. My hobbies include reading about a wide range of topics, journaling, creative writing, book arts, genealogy and family history work, and laughter yoga.

I am a current sophomore at the College of William and Mary, studying Hispanic Studies and Teaching English as a Second Language. I am an exceptionally, organized, driven, and passionate student. I have always had an interest in education. As a senior in high school I researched, wrote, and presented a twenty page research paper on the relationship between teacher education and the educational success of nations. Upon starting college, I got involved with a tutoring and mentoring program that works with local middle schools. I was given a group of four girls and spent all semester working with them on any subjects in which they or their teachers thought they needed extra support. I have learned critical teaching skills from working with my elementary-aged sister, who was recently diagnosed with a learning disability. From my work with her, I have a greater understanding of how to approach learning when working with students who struggle with a disability. My two most valuable skills are English and Spanish. As demonstrated by my test scores and chosen academic path, I excel in languages. After attending an academically challenging high school and studying currently at a liberal arts college, I have extensive experience in all aspects of both languages. In English, I have a firm foundation in the technical aspects of essay writing, vocabulary, and grammar, and as a voracious reader and writer myself, I understand the more intricate skills of style, tone, and voice. In Spanish, I have moved far beyond the basics of grammar and sentence structure to using the language in order to communicate and discuss complex ideas and theories in an academic setting. When it comes to my teaching style, I believe it is extremely important to get to know a student both personally and academically. Doing so helps make my job easier, and the student's experience more enjoyable. I tend to focus on breaking down a task into its simplest parts, so that I can see and explain to the student what they are doing well, and how to apply that success to areas that need work. I am a huge believer in organization and time management as crucial to educational success, and work with each student I tutor to learn those indispensable skills in order to help them feel more confident and in control of their education. In my free time, I enjoy reading, writing, doing yoga, learning new languages, horseback riding, and spending time with friends.
