Norfolk Tutoring FAQ

How much does Varsity Tutors cost for students in Norfolk?

The circumstances under which you or your student seeks personal instruction can affect the amount you pay. Let's say your middle schooler wants help with strengthening their writing skills.

You could pay a different amount under this scenario than if you choose to meet with an instructor to prepare for a professional certification exam. If your kindergartner needs reading help and spends multiple sessions over an entire term meeting with their teacher, the rate per session could be lower than if your young learner meets only a few times. You can figure out the best plan for your budget by speaking with one of our Educational Directors.

Tutoring review by Alexis in Norfolk, VA
The student was able to finish some of his in-class work that combined the two topics he was struggling with on our last session. We then devoted the rest of the session to doing substitution with systems of equations. He was resilient. Even when he got some of the work wrong, he kept at it and didn't give up. By the time our session was over, he had gotten a very firm grasp on how to do substitution. Our next session on Thursday will be primarily devoted to elimination.

Tutoring review by Tessa in Norfolk, VA
Today the student has begun writing an argumentative paper for class. He is finished with his first draft and will be peer editing soon. In science, his class is learning about gravity. This lesson corresponds perfectly with the reading project we have been working on. In math, they have begun reviewing for the state exams, which the student has expressed total confidence. Today we worked with vocabulary. Our main practice was centered around categorizing groups of like words, which meant that he not only had to understand the meaning of the words but also how they relate to other parts of speech and expression. Although the student was worried it would be boring, the challenge really interested him and he seemed reluctant to move on. Since he liked it so much, we will have to revisit this vocabulary work.

We continued to work through the student's review packet. Most of our time during this session was spent reviewing logarithmic functions; how to convert to exponential, how to solve a logarithmic function, and graphing. We also touched on how to add and subtract square roots and a few other odds and ends. She still has several practice problems that she can work through, and I can come up with others to help review the concepts since we have 2 more sessions before her exam.

The student received a graded test on metric measurements and conversions. We went over the test, and he made corrections as needed. After completing the test corrections, I gave him several practice problems in converting between metric units.

The student brought his science test that we had studied for together in our last session. He only missed three questions. For each one, I had him identify where the correct answer was in his book. Afterwards, we went through his weekend math homework. He is learning about box plots, and he had several questions about interpreting box plot graphs. He was able to make his own box plots easily, and he was mostly comfortable using the related terminology (median, minimum, maximum, interquartile range, etc.).
