Tonight, the student focused our session on preparation for her upcoming quiz on circles and arcs in geometry. She had several review packets to complete, which she did and I checked. We discussed the problems, rules, and definitions applicable to this content. She felt good about the material when I left, and she plans to spend more time working through the practice problems before the quiz.

For the first hour we spent reviewing the beginning 2/3 of the student's book, Beowulf. I had created 60 short answer questions that were factual based as well as analytical. The last 30 minutes were spent covering 4 pages of grammar focusing on parts of speech.

This session was mainly focused on study skills. The student and I re-capped her study strategy from her English and math midterms, and discussed what did and didn't work, and how she might continue to use similar strategies in the future. We also reviewed her current school work in math and English. She said she felt ok, and that she would bring me questions next week. Finally we started work on study skills around memorization, which didn't come up for her math and English midterms, so we hadn't covered it yet. Using the example of SSAT vocabulary words, she began working on a strategy using charts and visual reminders, which we will continue to work on next week.

Per the student's request, we worked on math and social studies today. In math, he had some homework revolving around a new concept for him, the Pythagorean theorem. First we reviewed the theorem, then wrote some index cards, then he solved the 11 problems. He saw patterns in solving very easily, and utilized the squares and cubes worksheet his teacher provided. I asked him to teach his mom some of this, to practice more. We next worked on The Trail of Tears section of Chapter 11 in his social studies book. He has a notebook check on Wednesday, and we got through 2/3 of the chapter for notes and discussion. We compared what was happening in the 1830s and 40s to the WWII Japanese American internment camps and the modern day idea of the right of eminent domain.

Today, we worked on the reading, math, social studies, and science portions of the assessment exam. The student feels confident about the work he is doing to prepare for the exam. We also went over his geometry quiz. He is doing well with the properties of quadrilaterals. We also discussed savanna biomes for his science class.
