Recent Holmes Beach Tutoring Session Notes

Tutoring review by Natalie in Holmes Beach, FL
We covered the student's recent geometry homework in which they are learning about triangle congruency; describing congruent lines and congruent angles. She got this concept very easily. When given a mirror image of congruent triangles she flipped the order of listed points on congruent lines, so I suggested she use the triangle names ABC and XYZ to follow which point is congruent with which point, whatever it asks for, just use the same order of the letters to get the congruent match for other triangle. This helped her avoid any flipping of letter order. We also worked on balancing chemical equations by adding coefficients to pre-written chemical reactions. She did very well at this, although sometimes would forget about the coefficient, or not properly address the coefficient and subscripts together. After working on two pages of examples, she was correctly balancing all of the atoms on left and right side of equation. I encouraged her to ask her teachers whenever something in class does not make sense to her, she definitely has the smarts to do well, with a positive attitude and setting aside dedicated time to study the materials presented in class, then taking her time when answering test questions so as not to make simple errors due to an assumption or not reading the exact question.

The student had recently taken a test on the trig identities, and I asked her how she felt. She said it was not that bad, but she hasn't gotten her results back yet. I told her to keep me posted. We went over polygon characteristics in detail today reviewing interior angles, exterior angles, and regular polygon concepts. We spent quite some time talking about the different quadrilaterals and properties of each special quadrilateral. She understood the material today fairly well. I also asked her to rewrite notes for the special quadrilaterals in a way she would understand them (with diagrams of each and labeling the properties on the diagrams). I will see her on Thursday.
