The student and I covered a couple of different topics. We continued studying for the SAT exam, and we also looked at some of his college essays. The work he put in on the essay has greatly improved it.

Tutoring review by Angelique in Madeira Beach, FL
The student and I have been working on more advanced geometry problems focused on volume. Because we have only met once every two weeks for the last month this has given her ample time to get comfortable with her school assignments and then bring her questions to be me when we meet. She has been excelling at her school assignments so I have been bringing in more complicated work. This week she finished up her homework for that day, and then we worked on several conical volume problems followed by 3 composite volume and surface area questions. I made sure to give her every opportunity to repeat the general formulas for each shape that we were calculating and reminded her of the importance of labeling all answers with proper units. Her understanding of what is required to find the volume is okay. I helped her through several of the steps that would help her to set up the final answers. She does very well at the calculation and was able to explain to me how to find some of the more unique surface areas. Next week I plan on bringing several more of these problem sets and have her show me the steps needed to solve them as well as bring in more complicated Pythagorean theorem problems for review. We meet again in a couple weeks.

Tutoring review by Sara in Madeira Beach, FL
Today, the student had a review packet for the geometry standardized test he's taking next week at school. This packet was basically a review of the whole year of geometry, and we got through the first half of it this afternoon. It was a great review for him, and I was happy to go through this material with him because we had never gone over some of this information before together. I was able to help him with a few minor problems he had with this material, although he remembered a good deal from these early sections, which is great. Mainly, we covered degrees of opposite and supplementary angles and finding slopes of parallel and perpendicular lines. It was a good review, and we'll finish the rest of the packet next week before his test.

Tutoring review by William in Madeira Beach, FL
The student and I first discussed school in general so I could get an understanding of how things were and what she needed to improve on. Her mother gave me a copy of her English syllabus and I looked this over to see what was due for the week. The student, according to her mother, needs improvement on preparation and organization, so we discussed how to be organized for quizzes she will be taking on the book, To Kill a Mockingbird. She then showed me an essay she wrote and I looked it over and agreed to send her some revision ideas (I did this today) that she could use and understand. Lastly, I had her read a page out of an 8th grade history book and had her underline the key points. Then I showed her two examples of note taking: basic outlining and Cornell. I discussed with her how to study for a test using a combination of underlining and note taking. The key point I wanted to get across was that in a normal text book, the first sentence in a paragraph is the topic sentence. After the session, I discussed with her mother the evaluation of the first session.

Tutoring review by Tam in Madeira Beach, FL
The student and I discussed complex numbers, long division, and synthetic division and their application in finding roots of high-order polynomial functions. We worked on simple operations of complex numbers, including: finding their conjugate, distributing, simplifying using special products, and determining unknowns involving complex numbers. For division of polynomials, we worked on several problems, as simple as direct division and as advanced as using synthetic division to test possible roots of polynomials. Overall, she did very well; she understood the concepts and was fluent in calculations. At this moment, she is on top of the materials presented in class.
