We continued discussing the student's English project. He was able to complete the visual flyer with the assignment I gave him for Friday. Once that was completed, we focused on advertising strategies and which ones presented to him fit with his product. Once we found 3 that worked, we discussed the details that made such strategies work. We ended the session discussing the video ad using similar concepts as the flyer. I asked him to complete the last part of the project, which involved a written article about his product.

We worked on identifying Latin cases in preparation for the student's upcoming Latin test. We came up with some good strategies for this. We also reviewed how to make effective outlines for his upcoming biology test. We practiced writing a short answer using the outline as a guide. We also talked about making flashcards to prepare him for the multiple choice section of his biology test.

We went through the checklist from the student's teacher and he submitted his speech. He made the revisions and send it in to his teacher.

We reviewed various phrases for the student's quiz tomorrow. He feels really confident and was understanding approximately 80% of the material. We needed to clarify gerund vs participial and solidify what differentiates the two. Moving forward, we will be reviewing this information for his upcoming exams.

The student and I had a great first session together! We started by doing a brief "about me" activity to get to know each other better. We then did a pretest on basic Algebra 1 concepts, which went very well! I reviewed the quadratic formula and its applications, and then we reviewed his homework for tomorrow on the topic. I am very impressed with how our first session went!

The student and I focused on SAT work today, spending time on math, grammar, and testing strategies. In math, we reviewed fraction/decimal conversions and did a little work on equivalent fractions (finding them using multiplication). Then, we worked on linear equations in y=mx+b form and completed equations by plugging in the knowns to solve for the unknown. In grammar, we did 5 different practice sets, mostly involving punctuation. He did best on the sets about subject-verb agreement and pronouns. We drilled some work on commas, semicolons, and colons. Then, we reviewed strategies such as guessing vs. not guessing as well as the timing of the test and how he can pace himself. Next time, we'll work on pacing, particularly in math and reading.
