Recent Western Springs SAT Subject Test in Literature Tutoring Session Notes
We ran through some practice tests today and identified that poetry is something we should focus on. Because of the sometimes subjective nature of Lit answers we have taken to discussing competing compelling answers and trying to elucidate the style in which CB like to test. Furthermore, I introduced rigorous vocabulary building techniques to use while she is studying.
Today was our first session together. The student wants to do prep work for SAT subject tests in Literature and Math. Today we focused on the literature exam. After briefly going over the structure of the exam, we spent a majority of the time going over the diagnostic he had taken. For our next meeting, the student will take another practice exam and make flash cards for the literary/poetry terms he needs to know.
We spent our time reviewing the basic concepts the student needed to know in order to take the SAT 2 Literature, reviewing definitions necessary for understanding the questions provided on each passage. We also went over some test-taking strategies so that the test itself will be a little easier for him to take. As this was our final session, I encouraged him to do some studying on his own time.
We did a quick review of prose (fiction & non-fiction) and then jumped back into poetry. The student is doing well, so for homework she should do the next practice test in the book, timed, so we can see her progress.
Today we covered some hard literary analysis questions. He has strong guessing and elimination strategies. Afterward, we talked a bit about his college admissions essay and how to structure/outline to grab the reader's attention and sympathy.
Used this session primarily for the student to orient herself to the SAT Lit test: its content knowledge and time expectations, necessary vocabulary, and required analytical skills. Conducted guided practice of a diagnostic test, in which we examined sample passages of each type seen on the SAT Lit exam. Prioritized poetry analysis for further review, and began compiling a list of content-specific vocabulary to review and remember for test day. Thematic analysis of fiction and non-fiction prose, as well as grammar skills, are sound.
