Photography Tutoring FAQ
Modern technology, like the ubiquitous smartphone, has made photography an important aspect of the modern world, but just because someone owns a camera does not mean that he or she knows how to use its functions in ways that will produce the most artistically pleasing results. Introduction to Photography courses aim to help students learn exactly what cameras can do, as well as teach them to give thought to the choices they make when deciding to photograph an object according to artistic principles, like the rule of thirds. These classes can thus present a variety of challenges to students wishing to master the basics of this craft, challenges that help them to gain the mixture of practical and theoretical knowledge that can allow them to achieve their best possible work.
Whether you are pursuing photography as a personal hobby, a career, or because such a class is required in your curriculum, Varsity Tutors can help you connect with a photography tutor that can help streamline your learning. They understand that each student struggles with different aspects of photography. Some may simply want to learn about each function of a DSLR camera and be able to use it appropriately. Others may need to write research reports about the influence of photography on painting at its inception. Still others may be developing their own photography business and want a refresher in the subject to stay sharp. No matter what your reasons for wanting to learn photography, a tutor can hone in on them and design your photography tutoring sessions specifically to help you meet your particular goals. In addition, they can teach in a way that appeals to your personal learning style.
The Varsity Tutors educational directors are available to help you fill out your student profile. This profile allows tutors to see details of your needs and goals, such as professional aspirations, upcoming projects, your course syllabus, and areas that you feel you need to improve. Your hand-picked tutor is able to identify your strengths and weaknesses, and customize an individualized tutoring plan just for you.
If you want to work in the medium of traditional film or to make use of the most up-to-date technology and digital editing software, tutors can help you know when and how to use the various photography methods and mediums. They can walk you through the aspects of photography that you struggle with in a way that challenges you without seeming overwhelming. Since each tutoring session is one-on-one, you can have your instructor's full attention and get immediate feedback on all the questions that may crop up while learning a new skill and working with cameras of various styles. Do you need to decide which lens to use for your class project? Your tutor can provide advice. Not sure what effects an adjustment to the white balance of your photographs can cause? Your tutor can demonstrate this with examples. Need to research a particular photographer's work? Your tutor can point you in the right direction and provide feedback on your progress throughout the process.
Your photography tutoring is all about you and your needs, and it is also about your schedule. Your tutor aims to make sessions as convenient as possible. They are flexible when it comes to where and when your sessions take place. If you want your tutor to hold in-person sessions in a local branch of your library, in a favorite coffee shop, or at your kitchen table, all of these are options that are available to you. You can request face-to-face online tutoring as well.
Do not delay in getting the one-on-one help that can aid you in gaining the skills and knowledge you need to meet your photography goals! Contact Varsity Tutors today for additional information on helping you connect with a photography tutor.

Recent Photography Tutoring Session Notes
Tonight we worked on another Precis. The topic was the Thomas Nast cartoon. She already had a thesis statement, which she had worked on in class. It was really good, and she liked it, so that's what we worked with. Her teacher had established a basic structure for what she needed to talk about, which made it a little easier to get started. But the student is starting to see/hear what sounds awkward as far as wording and transitions go. So she is not being complacent when it comes to her writing. That is definitely a change from the first time we worked together on a writing assignment way back in the fall. She is also now aware of what might be a run-on, and she is self-correcting/editing as she writes.
Today, we met and continued attacking the test strategies. We decided that the student will not be taking the essay because in doing the math and calculating her potential score, this risk is not worth the potential gain of changing her writing score. The writing score is scaled by the essay and right now her writing score is so high that she would have to match that with a near perfect essay. Thus, there is no real gain to taking the essay.
We did work on Math and Science, going over many practice problems and talking about timing.
For next time, the student will need to:
1) Practice Reading and Science (especially timing)
2) Learn the trigonometry functions
Properties of right triangles, parallel and perpendicular lines, corresponding, alternate interior, and same side interior angles, and problem solving using logic. Student seems to be much more confident in geometry than other math areas, but is having some issues with logical thinking on word problems.
We worked on some physics; the second moment of inertia problems were causing some confusion so we spent some time working through the formulas and developing an intuition for what was happening. In the end I think he knows in his mind what inertia, momentum and fore are and how they relate to each other; now we just have to work on applying them to a problem. In differential equations he is coming up against systems of differential equations so matrix algebra is on the table. We worked with matrix multiplication, determinants, inverses and Cramer's rule. Those topics seemed to sink in well.
We went over the student's practice tests, and techniques for writing the essay. We focused on math topics that he had learned in school but forgotten (and might need for the exam), and did some reading comprehension "slow" drills so that he could see how working through the questions more slowly could help him get the right answer.
We focused on the math section. The student's overall score was the same as her initial test. She struggled with identifying how to begin many problems, but once they were explained to her, she found them easy in relation to concepts. She needs to focus on practicing so that she will gain confidence; she has the understanding of basic concepts.
