I'm a Math and French major at Brown University, and I've been tutoring for over three years. I have worked with young kids taking elementary-level math, middle school students taking Pre-Algebra and Algebra, high school students taking Pre-Calculus and Calculus, college students taking Calculus I/II and Linear Algebra -- and any level in between! Tutoring is one of my favorite activities, because every student I work with teaches me something new about my field. In addition to doing math and writing French poetry, I play the piano, contract bridge, soccer and tennis. I am also a passionate vegan, and hope to one day combine math and language into a field that draws on both the sciences and the humanities. Hobbies: reading, music, writing, art, books

I am firmly of the belief that learning a technical subject like chemistry, physics, or math is much like learning a foreign language: listening and reading is much easier than speaking and writing. It is all too easy to fall into the trap of believing that if you come to class and understand what the instructor is saying, you don't need to practice the material. Accordingly, I emphasize the need to practice "speaking" the language on a regular basis and to receive immediate feedback on one's learning. In my free time I enjoy woodworking and playing with Legos with my small children.

I am a recent graduate of Arizona State University with a Bachelors of Science and Engineering (BSE) in Chemical Engineering. I was selected as the outstanding graduate for the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering and have extensive math, physics, and writing experience. I recently applied and was accepted to many top-ten PhD programs for engineering because of academic merit and personal statement writing skills. I will be attending the University of Texas at Austin in the fall. Hobbies: books, reading, writing, music, running, hiking, art

I am graduate of Boston University with a BS in nutrition and premedical studies and University of New England with a degree in Medicine. During my year between undergraduate school and medical school, I worked full time as a nutrition educator in grades kindergarten through 12th grade in Boston Public schools. During this time I was also a private tutor for high school students and completed in-home one-on-one tutoring sessions in the sciences and mathematics. I have completed medical coursework in biochemistry, anatomy, and nutrition. I will be a great tutor from my in-depth understanding of the material and ability to educate students in middle school, high school and college I have also peer tutored chemistry and biology during college.

I am a graduate of Brigham Young University where I majored in International Relations and Russian and of Thunderbird School of Global Management where I earned an MBA in International Business. My college and graduate studies include coursework in Writing, Literature, Geography, History, Political Science, Russian, Music, Business, Math, Science, and Art. Because of my experience with many different disciplines, I am able to teach a wide variety of subjects and have experience working with students of all ages from middle school to middle aged. My greatest skill as a tutor is the ability to adapt challenging material to the viewpoint of my students. This allows me to build bridges of understanding that help more analytical people feel at home in creative disciplines or vice versa. If you are a gifted artist struggling with Math, or an aspiring scientist struggling with creative writing, I'm your man! I am also a very experienced writer and editor. In my free time I enjoy hiking, literature, ultimate Frisbee, international travel, soccer, baking, music, strategy games, and philosophical discussions. I have lived in Africa, Western Europe, and Russia and visited over a dozen countries. Please note that due to the many different subjects I have studied, the list of classes above is not complete. If you have tutoring needs for a very specific subject, I may well have taken a course in that area. Feel free to reach out with questions!

I am well versed in all types of questions the students will be faced with on homework or exams. Also, in addition to my teaching experience at Purdue, I have been teaching a one week course in Shanghai yearly since 2008 to prepare Chinese Occupational Health and Safety professionals to take the Certified Industrial Hygienist exam and part of what I help them with are some of the tricks of the trade for successfully taking these types of exams. I also helped my daughter prepare for her GRE exam when her GRE Boot Camp program was suddenly cancelled my prep work with her helped her increase her math score approximately 100 points.

Frequently Asked Questions
The biggest challenge areas are typically calculus concepts (limits, derivatives, and integrals), trigonometric identities and applications, and the transition from algebraic to analytical thinking. Many students also struggle with proofs in geometry-based courses, understanding when to apply different problem-solving strategies, and connecting abstract concepts to real-world applications. Word problems that require setting up multi-step equations or systems remain a consistent pain point, especially when students need to interpret what the problem is actually asking before solving.
Expert tutors focus on helping students understand the 'why' behind formulas and methods, not just the 'how.' For example, instead of memorizing the derivative rules, a tutor helps you see how the derivative represents a rate of change and why the power rule works the way it does. This conceptual foundation makes it easier to tackle unfamiliar problems and recognize when different strategies apply—a critical skill for 12th Grade math where problems become increasingly abstract and require flexible thinking.
In 12th Grade math, especially on standardized tests and AP exams, showing your work is worth significant points even if your final answer is wrong. More importantly, when you articulate each step and explain your reasoning, you catch errors in your own thinking and build stronger problem-solving habits. A tutor helps you develop clear mathematical communication—writing out what you're doing and why—which deepens your understanding and makes it easier to debug mistakes when something doesn't work.
Math anxiety often stems from gaps in foundational skills or past negative experiences, and a tutor can identify exactly where those gaps are without judgment. By working through problems at your own pace and celebrating small wins, you rebuild confidence and see that you're more capable than you thought. Tutors also help you develop strategies for managing test anxiety and approaching difficult problems systematically, which reduces the panic that often accompanies challenging material.
12th Grade math builds heavily on earlier concepts—calculus uses algebra, trigonometry connects to exponential functions, and proofs rely on logical reasoning from geometry. A tutor helps you recognize these connections by showing how concepts relate to each other rather than treating them as isolated topics. For instance, understanding that logarithms are the inverse of exponential functions makes both concepts clearer. This connected understanding makes the material feel less overwhelming and helps you retain information longer.
Effective word problem solving starts with reading carefully and identifying what you're actually solving for, then working backward to determine what information you need. A tutor teaches you to translate words into mathematical notation, break complex problems into smaller chunks, and choose the right tool (equation, graph, or system) for the situation. Practice with deliberate feedback on your approach—not just your answer—helps you develop intuition for recognizing problem types and applying the right strategies consistently.
Many 12th Grade students struggle to connect algebraic equations with their visual representations on a graph. Tutors use graphing tools and visual explanations to show how changes in an equation (like coefficients or exponents) affect the shape and position of a graph. This visualization helps you understand concepts like transformations, asymptotes, and the relationship between a function and its derivative in a concrete way, making abstract ideas feel tangible and memorable.
Look for tutors with strong subject knowledge in the specific topics you're studying (calculus, pre-calculus, statistics, or other 12th Grade courses), experience working with students at your level, and the ability to explain concepts clearly in multiple ways. If you're preparing for standardized tests like the SAT or ACT, or AP exams, experience with those formats is valuable. Most importantly, find someone who can diagnose where your understanding breaks down and adjust their teaching to match your learning style, not just follow a script.
