Session Summaries by Phonics Tutors

Phonics Tutoring review by Jeremy in Sandy Springs, GA
During today's session, we put the finishing touches on the student's feasibility report for her technical writing class. This process involved reviewing and editing all she had written up to this point, and then enhancing several sections. While we were looking at one particular section, we were also able to have a valuable, and hopefully informative, discussion about how to match styles to the type of writing one is doing. Overall, the session was very productive.

We worked on creative writing using prompts I gave the sisters. We need to work hard on writing over the summer, so they have confidence in sharing through writing what they so easily share in speaking. We reviewed some homework. That was fulfilling for all of us.

Phonics Tutoring review by Alison in Sandy Springs, GA
Today the student and I started Unit 5 in her art history course. The unit covers women in art in the second half of the 19th Century. I first gave a short lesson on the historical context of the era, discussing the Industrial Revolution, the Women's Rights Movement, the American Civil War, Reconstruction, imperialism, etc. We then went over the unit readings, focusing primarily on the Impressionist painter Berthe Morisot. Finally, I helped her draft a discussion response about Morisot's unprecedented artistic treatment of women's work.

During this session, I continued to work with the student on his History research essay. His current draft demonstrated great improvement in his writing and research. His introductory paragraph was much better organized. We reviewed Harold Urey quotes again, and the student simply needs to determine which quote best suits his argument and the predominant themes of his paper. His body paragraph on Urey's personal life and development as a writer was much more fleshed out. Each detail about Urey's life that the student incorporated was pertinent to his overall argument.

Phonics Tutoring review by Andrea in Sandy Springs, GA
The student and I worked on a variety of topics today. We worked on his math fractions homework to start, but did not spend too much time on that today because we wanted to focus on science. He has a test tomorrow on the earth and moon so we spent most of the time studying for that where he did very well. I made up a test for him for extra practice.

Phonics Tutoring review by Shannon in Sandy Springs, GA
The student created sentences using words with "ed" and "ing" endings, studied vocabulary, finished reading "Diary of a Wimpy Kid," answered reading comprehension questions, and wrote questions for me to answer. He did excellent on the word studies and has made awesome progress in reading. He was excited to read his book, read very quickly and steadily, and stopped to figure out every word that he was unsure of. He also answered all of the comprehension questions very well and thought of great questions to ask me.
