Duluth Phonics Tutoring FAQ

There are several components to teaching your child how to read. Phonics is one of the biggest keys to unlocking this ability. Your child needs to know this skill in order to progress in their reading. Doing well in other subjects can hinge on reading, so a lack of progress can be detrimental across the board. You want your child to have a smooth educational journey, and there is help out there should they need assistance. Varsity Tutors' educational directors will connect you with a phonics tutor in Duluth, Georgia, who can show your child that their dreams are possible.

There is a lot to learn along the path to understanding phonics. Your child will encounter such concepts as long vowels, short vowels, blending, and single consonants. Learning all these topics could help your child down the road when they take the Georgia Milestones Assessment System (Georgia Milestones) test. Phonics study can also open career options for your child, including being a speech therapist and a teacher of English as a Second Language (ESL). Our educational directors will find an phonics tutor for you in Duluth, GA, by getting to know your child and their goals and needs.

Phonics can be tricky to learn in a classroom setting. Large classroom settings can make it hard for your child to get the one-on-one attention that they need if they are struggling. Their self-confidence can plummet if their classmates show impatience if your child reads slower than them. That can cause them to slip through the cracks. There are a wealth of phonics books to choose from to help a slower learner, but selecting the right one might prove difficult. Setting your child up with a tutor in a relaxed environment for a one-on-one session can be really beneficial. Your child's tutor will know all the best methods of guiding them through phonics. They will show patience should your son or daughter struggle with a certain area, repeating that section until they understand it. An expert phonics tutor in Duluth might help produce improved results in a short time span.

It's simple to set up your child's sessions. Your child's tutor can meet at whatever time and location you wish. They can meet your son or daughter at nearly any place, including coffee shops, diners, libraries, and your own home. Should your child prefer using the Internet, there are face-to-face online sessions available.

Phonics doesn't have to be a hurdle on your child's path to learning to read. Let us find you an expert phonics tutor in Duluth who is trained to teach students at any proficiency level.

The student started her creative project. She found all of the quotes she wanted to use, and started building the project. We spent a little time determining what the pictures should be. She also worked on terms in both world cultures and English.

I started the student with a reading comprehension practice, which she did moderately well on with some help. Afterwards, we reviewed her spelling and vocabulary words. Her spelling has improved greatly since our last session and she correctly spelled most of the words she missed the previous week. Finally, I went over one of her school writing assignments with her, pointing out the things that she missed. She understood quickly and half-way through the assignment, was able to fix most of her mistakes herself.

Today, the first student and I worked some more on long division and nouns. She seemed to understand it. We also began going through her novel. The second student and I worked primarily on area of compound figures. We introduced circles today. She was able to successfully complete the problems I assigned. The third student and I worked on sentence types (simple, compound, complex). Our focus was proper sentence structure and punctuation usage. She also did a very good job! She took a lot of notes. Well done, all!!

Phonics Tutoring review by Patrick in Duluth, GA
In our sessions today, the student and I worked through analyzing a bio-chem article on Artificial Enzymes. We broke the article down to determine its most important facts and outlined a 2-page summary paper which she was assigned. After we completed the outline, we worked through creating a rough draft of the paper while simultaneously conducting further analysis on certain topics within the paper. The student was struggling with how to outline and organize her ideas. So, we started with a clear outline and sub points. After this was completed, we wrote each paragraph and arranged thoughts in coherent and logical orders. She is working on the rest of the paper this evening on her own to demonstrate understanding and proficiency on the subjects and skills that were discussed today.

Phonics Tutoring review by Adriane in Duluth, GA
The student and I worked on math, reading, and writing today. We started by playing her favorite math game (rolling dice and converting coins) before switching to her second favorite math game (number card pairs addition). She completed two handwriting worksheets today, and I think she had a bit of a breakthrough about the downside of speedwriting: when she realized that her lowercase "r" needed to be erased and rewritten because it resembled a "v," she commented that rewriting actually takes more time than writing carefully. We finished by reading two new books from her favorite book series, "Elephant & Piggie." She really enjoys reading those!
