For the past 10 years, I have worked with a local non-profit as a certified tutor and part-time teacher. I have provided guidance and support for students as they strive to meet their goals. My experience as an AmeriCorps VISTA has given me the opportunity to create and coordinate programs for youth and community members on a citywide level in Orlando and New Orleans. These programs are still operational today, and achieving their goals of boosting educational attainment and reducing crime.I have helped adults who speak English, but dont know the alphabet. I have helped others get their GED and study for college Algebra finals. I have helped students learn to understand, speak, read, and write in English better, so they can improve their performance in school, on the job, gain citizenship, and make new friends. I work with youth to develop study strategies that will help them be successful in school and in life. I have tutored students to meet, and exceed, grade level expectations in reading, writing, math, social studies, and science. My favorite subjects to tutor are reading, writing, ESOL/ESL, and Adult Basic Education. I enjoy working with adults because they tend to be very clear about what they wish to learn and why. I enjoy working with youth because I love seeing the spark of excitement when they begin to understand the magnitude of their potential. My teaching philosophy is that students are most successful when they clearly define their own goals. My young students may want to finish their homework early to have more time for the fun things they enjoy, or improve their grades to stay out of trouble. My adult students may simply need a drivers license to find a better job or free up more time to spend with their families. Some need to pass a professional exam to use their advanced degrees in the US. I have helped them all achieve success. My tutoring style is collaborative. I work WITH my students to help THEM achieve THEIR goals. This is fundamental and very important to me. I choose curriculum and teaching materials based on my students goals, ability, and learning style. The real work belongs to the student, but I do my best to make it as fun and interesting as possible. On a less serious note, I am just a simple nerd who loves learning new things. I love taking my nieces to the Orlando Science Center, watching superhero movies and cartoons, and going to comic book stores. My favorite superhero is Wonder Woman because she stands for truth, justice, and equality even though she sometimes has her doubts about humanity.

I am a graduate of Hawaii Pacific University. I received my Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and took 2 1/2 years of science based classes towards a Biology major initially having the goal of becoming a medical doctor. Growing up in Hawaii with parents from Europe and Asia, I've traveled extensively to visit family all around the globe. I worked as a Group Leader at the YMCA supervising a group of 90 kids (ages K-5) and also filled in for professors. My peers always joked that I was "teacher's pet." While I enjoy all things academic, I find learning languages and the culture behind them especially fascinating as they can provide a form of unity. I'm drawn to the ocean having lived in Hawaii, Southern California, and now Palm Beach County. In my free time I enjoy exploring the great outdoors and my guilty pleasure is watching random clips on Youtube while enjoying a good meal.

I graduated from Wake Forest University in May 2012. I received my Bachelor of Arts with honors in psychology. I currently am working toward my Master in Public Health at the University of South Florida. While attending Wake Forest and after graduating, I worked at a school for children with developmental disabilities. I have always loved math, from the time I was in elementary school up until now, while I am taking graduate level statistics courses. My favorite subjects to tutor are all math courses- from elementary up to statistics. My favorite part about tutoring is when a child really, truly starts to understand the material and they have that "aha" moment. Education is something that has always been important to me and I enjoy being able to help others get the education that they deserve. In my free time, I enjoy running, taking spin classes, experimenting with new recipes, and traveling. I am very involved in the community and spend a lot of my time volunteering through the Junior League of Tampa.

Hello! My name is Joshua! I am a second-year student at the University of South Florida, studying mechanical engineering. I am also in the NROTC program and will commission into the Navy in 2019. My favorite sport is football and my favorite team is the Baltimore Ravens [yes, I will tutor you even if you like the Steelers ;) ]. I have two years of experience teaching Theater in a classroom. I am a fan of the theater and my favorite plays are Hamlet and Waiting for Godot. I love teaching, and it runs in my blood (Both of my parents are teachers). My teaching style is energetic, engaging and fun. I believe that learning is not about passing tests, but expanding your knowledge, and I am willing to help you do this in any way I can and can adapt lessons to fit your interests. This way, you want to learn the material, and when it comes time to take a test, you are showing what you know and not what you memorized.I have two younger sisters, with whom I occasionally share my love and knowledge of math and science. I have experience in algebra, trigonometry, and Calculus, but I am definitely the most comfortable with Calculus 1, and algebra. I also have a love for physics, specifically kinematics and statics (Free body diagrams!!!). I also did well with (and strangely enjoyed) chemistry in high school and in college! Looking for help with standardized tests? I can help with SAT/ACT test strategies and preparation, as I spent my whole senior year of high school preparing for these tests. I have also taken and scored in the 80s for the ASVAB. Finally, I enjoy writing. If you are looking to impress others, I have experience writing poetry and scripts. Essentially, I enjoy creative writing and can assist in expository writing. As far as other interests, I am a part-time nerd and love Star wars and superheroes, my favorite being batman. I am also the proud owner of a Disney annual pass, which my fianc proposed I purchase in order to accompany her. If you are curious, my favorite Princess is Ariel and my favorite Disney movies are Cars, Lion King (Let me know if you get the irony), and Toy Story.
