Winnipeg PCAT Verbal Ability Tutoring FAQ
In reviewing for the Pharmacy College Admission Test, or PCAT, many students focus the majority of their studying time on the exam's Chemistry, Biology, and Quantitative Ability sections, only to have the Verbal Ability section sneak up on them on test day and negatively impact their score. The PCAT Verbal Ability section presents a challenging array of analogy and fill-in-the-blank questions, the rigor of which often catches students off guard. The PCAT's analogy questions can involve single words, single-concept phrases, or famous historical figures, and both the analogy and fill-in-the-blank questions require test-takers to work through each potential answer with an eye for subtle differences in meaning. It takes a very specific style of studying and practice to be sufficiently prepared for this section of the exam.
Over the course of your academic career, you have likely taken classes devoted to helping you master the content covered on the PCAT's Chemistry, Biology, and Quantitative Ability sections. However, you may never have received any formal instruction in how to best approach the Verbal Ability section's questions, and you may find that impersonal resources and class-based preparation simply don't provide you with the customized instruction you need to feel fully prepared. In many areas of study, a traditional classroom environment does not provide the proper amount of personalized instruction for each student to fully understand the material at hand, and PCAT preparation can often be one of these areas. One-on-one PCAT Verbal Ability tutoring can provide you with focused instruction that addresses your specific strengths and weaknesses and help you approach this section of the PCAT with confidence. Varsity Tutors can connect you with experienced tutors in your area that have taken the exam themselves and can tell you what to expect when test day rolls around. When it comes to standardized testing, students can often be experts in all the material that is being covered but still be unprepared for the format of the exam and style of the questions to be asked. Private tutors can not only help you to fill in any gaps in your knowledge but also instill a confidence in you by explaining exactly what the test will consist of.
Our goal is to help each student connect with a tutor who will create a customized learning experience tailored to his or her specific academic needs. Our educational directors can help you select the tutor best suited for your PCAT prep, based on a number of details surrounding your previous educational experiences, strengths and weaknesses, and concerns about your review. Then, you and your tutor can collaborate to design a customized PCAT Verbal Ability tutoring plan that focuses on just the topics and problem types that most concern you. Whether you need to work on test-taking strategies or expanding your vocabulary, your tutor can provide you with one-on-one instruction addressing your weakest areas. You may be surprised at how quickly you can improve your Verbal Ability skillset with the help of focused attention from a talented instructor.

We started by working on new sections Rates and Circles / Cylinders. I assigned these from the prep book. After this, we began to focus on sentence completions. She is doing well with the math (sometimes requiring a little bit of review / teaching), but vocabulary is a particular issue. She is working through flash cards as well as problems. I assigned 76-100 of the text completions as well as the two math chapters on circles / cylinders and rates.
The student and I met for our first session of tutoring. In this session we began to go over mathematical concepts in the arithmetic section. We went over number properties, fractions, and averages. While the student has forgotten a lot, he has a good mathematical sense. If he pushes himself and keeps up with his work he can improve his math skills.
Primary focus in this session was on Quantitative section. Introduction of PIN and Backsolving alongside continued execution of cases for Quant Comparison questions.
We covered more practice issue topics for the writing portion of the exam. We practiced identifying ways to quickly come up with a number of bullet points to use in the essay. We also discussed test-taking strategy with regards to the grading scale.
The student and I went over a practice test that she had taken. I explained the questions she did not answer correctly and also showed her some ways she could have saved time. We also went over the concepts of standard deviation and the normal distribution and went over some questions about those topics. We ended by going over the argumentative essay and what the exam expected an effective essay to contain.
