Ontario Mandarin Chinese 2 Tutoring FAQ
Students taking Mandarin Chinese 2 build on the language skills they acquired in Mandarin Chinese 1 in order to improve their fluency in the dialect and gain a more complete understanding of Mandarin Chinese-speaking cultures. The biggest challenge for many students taking Mandarin Chinese 2 turns out to be keeping their knowledge of previously learned concepts fresh and ready for active use while learning new material. Certain challenges that first appeared in Mandarin Chinese 1 may persist as obstacles that need to be continuously surmounted in more advanced coursework.
When learning new vocabulary, students are still expected to express terms in traditional Chinese characters, simplified Chinese characters, and Pinyin Romanization, as well as pronounce vocabulary using the unintuitive tonal system of Mandarin Chinese. If students struggled with any of these topics in their previous coursework, it might spell trouble for them in Mandarin Chinese 2. While it is difficult enough to expand your understanding of increasingly complex grammatical constructions, learn additional vocabulary, and master new social details, it is the cumulative nature of the course that often proves to be a student's most imposing challenge. Classes spend relatively little time in reviewing previous course content, and you may have a hard time figuring out exactly which concepts it would most benefit you to review. Even if you can self-identify the weak points in your understanding, mastering this content can be extremely difficult without knowledgeable assistance.
If you are looking for guidance in your course, Mandarin Chinese tutoring might be just the thing to help you streamline your studies. Whether you need help with vocabulary or a grammatical concept from your previous course, your tutor can focus on exactly the material you need to review. Your tutor can create a customized learning plan for your Mandarin Chinese 2 tutoring sessions that focuses on the material you struggle with most, saving you time and energy by not asking you to review concepts that you have already mastered. If it is your speaking skills that could use more practice, your tutor makes for an excellent conversation partner. If it is reading or writing in Mandarin Chinese that you find most confusing, your tutor can help you work through targeted practice exercises, providing feedback and answering any questions you may have about the material along the way. If you need to prepare for an exam, your tutor can help you focus on reviewing the content that it will test. No matter what your particular concerns are with your Mandarin Chinese 2 course, your tutor can help you address them.

Recent Ontario Mandarin Chinese 2 Tutoring Session Notes
We worked on Lesson 13 Asking Directions. Giving directions is one of the hardest topics in learning Mandarin. We worked on direction and location words. Also, we practiced comparative sentences, special Mandarin word usages such as "dao," "guo", and resultative complements.
I did needs analysis at the beginning including at the student's current level, Chinese learning background, expectation from this tutoring session, and the general schedule to meet every week. We started some vocabulary for "family tree" as warm-up, and I left some homework for preview and extra homework. She didn't show me grades but I prepared some exercise as a quiz to see where she is. From her feedback, we decided to use her textbook as the main materials, include all language skills especially grammar and writing. We'll meet once a week for 90 minutes at 2:00pm, at the Library.
In the session, I was impressed by her Chinese proficiency. She has no difficulty understanding my questions and can express herself perfectly. We went over the grammar and practiced two sets of questions, we also had a dictation to help her review the vocabulary. I truly enjoyed working with her.
The student made a mother's day card for his mom in Chinese. He also needed help preparing for his math test tomorrow, so we reviewed the distributive, commutative, identity, and associative properties of addition and multiplication. He also completed some challenging problems using those properties and then I gave him some FOIL problems, which he figured out on his own with no teaching from me.
The student and I started off by going over common conversational phrases and trying to have a conversation in Mandarin using the question-response format. We went over "Where are you from?", "Where is the bathroom?", "What time is it?" etc. We also went over two old dialogues, one involving hobbies/going out and one involving family, in order to review old vocabulary. We finished off by going over a new dialogue which expanded the vocabulary relating to hobbies.
This is the last session and we did revision of most the vocabulary of the semester. There were at least three different kinds of vocabulary, and we made sentences or asked questions to connect them together to strengthen the usages of them as well as the recognition. With scaffolding the student could made sentences using most of the vocabulary.
