The ACT can be one of the biggest hurdles you will face in high school.
You can learn to approach the ACT with ability and confidence. College admissions departments may be fickle when it comes to ACT scores - thus, your score can have a significant impact on your academic future. No pressure though; an Ann Arbor ACT prep course provided by Varsity Tutors can give you a chance to fill any skills gaps, practice with the types of questions you'll see on the exam, and build your confidence ahead of time.
What Academic Areas Can an Ann Arbor ACT Class Help Me Improve In?
Our ACT class can provide a review in any academic core subject you've encountered at area secondary institutions like Huron High School or Pioneer High School. Without the optional Writing section, the ACT includes four main areas: Math, Reading, English, and Science. The required part of the exam is 2 hours, 55 minutes long. With the Writing section included, you have 3 hours, 35 minutes to complete the entire test. By taking an Ann Arbor ACT class, you can make your review and study time much more efficient.
For the most part, the ACT is a multiple-choice exam. The Math section is 60 minutes long and includes 60 questions related to what you've learned in pre-algebra, algebra, and coordinate and plane geometry as well as trigonometry. Your knowledge of number systems and ability to interpret equations, solve math problems, and work with graphing, functions, and data collection and analysis will be tested. There will also be questions on probability and distribution as well as solid measurement calculations.
The Reading section, comprising 40 questions, is 35 minutes long and consists of passages written at a first-year college reading level. This part of the ACT measures your reading comprehension. To demonstrate your proficiency in this area, you will need to recognize the central ideas and themes of passages, summarize ideas, and point out the meaning of words and phrases. The difference between fact and opinion must be recognized for some questions, and you'll be required to make connections based on the content of different passages.
The 45-minute English section tests your language skills. There are 75 questions in which you must demonstrate your understanding of English, from grammar and punctuation to usage and sentence structure. Your ability to be organized, cohesive, and unified is critical as you move towards a college-level program. Recognizing different styles and tones of language is crucial as well.
A Science section is also included on the ACT. It has 40 questions to answer in 35 minutes. In addition to testing your working knowledge of the scientific method, it measures your ability to analyze, interpret, and evaluate data as well as engage in reasoning and problem-solving. Some questions might focus on investigations and experiments. Your preparation for this section should focus on scientific thinking and what you've learned in biology, chemistry, Earth and space science, and physics courses.

I received my undergraduate degree in Physics with a minor in Mathematics. Also, I recently graduated with my Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in Applied Physics. I love teaching and helping students grasp concepts. I believe in moving beyond rote memorization to personal mastery and ownership of one's education. I am available to tutor in SAT Math Test prep, Algebra 1-4, Pre-Calulus, and Trigonometry.... I found it most rewarding to continuously remind my students that math and science mastery is obtainable as long as they were willing to persevere and struggle through difficult concepts. I look forward to each opportunity to empower my students through tutoring. I have also taught SAT courses, so I realize the importance of student engagement and participation when teaching complex subjects. I adapt my style and teaching to each student.
