My name is Ethan Swerdlow, and I am currently working as a Mechanical Engineer at Boeing's Huntington Beach facility.I received a Bachelor of Science degree from Lafayette College in Mechanical Engineering, with a minor in Mathematics. I played Division-I Football for all four years of my undergraduate experience.I was born and raised in San Diego, and attended La Jolla High School. During my high school years, I played varsity football and lacrosse, and completed a rigorous course load.Because of my 8 years as a student-athlete, I understand the complexities of time management that students face when balancing difficult coursework and other activities. Throughout my higher education, I have enjoyed tutoring. My strengths and passions are in math and science. Growing up, I struggled a bit with other subjects, and because of this, I have a great appreciation for the importance of a helpful tutor.

I am currently attending California Institute of the Arts. I am studying art, as well as theatre and art management. Eventually, I hope to attend grad school for library science. My favorite things to tutor are the GRE and the SAT, in part because I feel like a high score on these exams should be accessible for anyone if they are given the tools for success. I returned several times and witnessed the power of education in transforming impoverished communities. At North Carolina State University, I taught children how to eat healthy on a fixed income through Cooking Matters. I am currently teaching CPR and First Aid with the Red Cross and volunteer at a free clinic in Santa Monica while I apply to Medical School. While I have taught a broad range of subjects, Biology and Spanish are my passion. In my spare time, I enjoy riding horses, yoga, and hiking.

History buff and Italian language enthusiast!I am a European History graduate from University of California, Santa Cruz. I am incredibly passionate about the history of Europe over the course of the last hundred years and the impacts that major historical events, such as the rise and fall of fascism, had on the development of the world as we know it. I believe that this strong passion can be put into good use to educate and help others understand the importance of history and where it can lead us. I am particularly interested in educating and researching events surrounding the marginalization and persecution of people of different creeds, colors and situations in the hopes that it will illuminate similarities in present times. Through this I hope to find a position that allows me to educate future generations and teach them the importance of equality and prosperity for all.

I am a certified teacher and have years of experience working in schools alongside students. I love teaching because it challenges me in ways that I never thought possible. I also love when I help a student achieve something he or she thought was beyond their capability. I will never get tired of witnessing those "a-ha!" moments in my students. Helping a student understand a concept or simply soliciting a smile out of him or her is sometimes all the encouragement a teacher needs.I pride myself on having a positive attitude and confront most situations with a smile. I firmly believe that when you change your mindset you can change the world. I can easily adapt to varying situations and have done so many times in my life. For example, my sense of adventure led me to travel for almost a year after college. I worked alongside families in Italy on their farms and lived out of a backpack. I was in a foreign country living with total strangers who did not always speak my language. I learned to be flexible and to enjoy the unknown.My experience working with students is vast. In the realm of teaching, I completed internships in a variety of schools and subject areas. I worked for a year with severely autistic students and enjoyed being part of a team of people committed to helping this special population. I was a Social Studies teacher for two years and now I currently work in the special education department at a middle school. I also have experience tutoring elementary aged students. In college I volunteered fifteen hours a week as a youth ministry leader. I counseled girls through life's trials and built strong relationships with them. Through that same youth ministry program, I had the opportunity to work most summers at adventure camps. I led teenagers through ropes courses and on mountain biking excursions. It thrilled me to help girls overcome obstacles and confront fears. My time as an assistant basketball coach also satisfied my passion for working with adolescents. I coached a very diverse group of girls and took great pride in watching them overcome their differences and truly bond as a team.There is always something new to learn while working with youth and I am always willing to change or adapt to make things more successful. I hope to create this same attitude in those I tutor. I hope that they leave our session always wanting to learn more after I have helped them work through their academic struggles using my vast knowledge of teaching best practices.In my personal life I like to stay very active and feel the most alive when I get to enjoy the outdoors. In the beginning of college, I volunteered as a teaching assistant in elementary and middle schools around USC and worked for CollegeSpring, an organization that provides SAT tutoring to socio-economically disadvantaged students for free. I tutored SAT test preparation and also mentored students about the college admissions process and their career goals. Since then, I have been serving as a private in-home tutor for students at USC and around Los Angeles. More recently, I founded and led programs at USC to advocate for educational justice for local students and empower my fellow USC students to become more involved in our local communitys education system.I have tutored all subjects, but I am most passionate about Math, Social Studies, Spanish, and SAT/College Prep. My favorite part about tutoring is being able to get creative about my lessons so that I can captivate and empower every student in their learning and help them achieve success.
