Which grade in?

Mr. D. was able to keep my daughter engaged and interested the entire session. He made her feel confident with reading. She stated that he was the "best teacher in the world". She gave him two thumbs up and a heart. I'm very pleased with my investment towards my child's education using Varsity Tutors.

What year in?

I want to thank VT for connecting me with my English tutor. I'm a 49 yr old that enrolled back in college to complete my degree and I was having the most difficult time meeting the demands of my writing assignments. But fortunately, I was matched with an educator that has made what seemed hopeless in my efforts to write academic papers effectively a piece of cake.

What prompted you to seek tutoring?

I'm very grateful to have found VT. They made the difference between a pass and fail grade for my son. English was one of his most challenging classes and with Varsity Tutors he passed the course. I'm forever grateful.

Do they have an IEP or 504 plan? (We have tutors that specialize in learning differences)

The tutor that was paired with my daughter was perfect and fits Bella's needs. Bella struggles with attention and has been on a 504 plan for years. The tools used, the interaction and flexibility are priceless. I was hesitant at first but now I'd do it again and I recommend Varsity Tutors!!

English Tutoring review by Shelly in Vacaville, CA
This session, the student and I reviewed what we learned about thesis statements and talked about the thesis he wrote for his homework assignment. We streamlined the thesis before using it to form three topic sentences. We also worked on some writing mechanics exercises (spelling, punctuation, grammar).

English Tutoring review by Ashley in Vacaville, CA
The student and I focused on 5 new sight words. We reviewed the word skill analysis sounds of SP and ST by listening to the sound it makes as well as applying it to the words that begin and/or end with SP and ST. I then talked about the prefix of "re" and that when it is placed in front of a root word, it usually means "again" (i.e. retell, repeat, reread, etc.). He did very well with this concept and was able to apply it to other root words. We then focused on oral reading and reading comprehension by reading, "Wings on Things." He skimmed through the pages and felt a little more confident to read this book than the book from our last session. We were able to get through this whole book rather than only one page (which happened in our last session). We finished our session by playing hangman and putting stickers on our progress chart. He was impressed by how much work we were able to accomplish over the last 4 weeks.

English Tutoring review by Eric in Vacaville, CA
Today we covered writing a "how to" essay, including structured and logical thinking. The student read two examples and discussed the pros and cons of each. She then outlined and wrote a draft of her own essay, on washing a dog, and we then read it and discussed ways of improving it.

English Tutoring review by Danielle in Vacaville, CA
We reviewed thesis statements, and topic sentences. The student wrote the two topic sentences for his paper. Then he worked on his intro paragraph. He also completed one of his body paragraphs. He read some more in his book. For next time he is going to read another chapter. Next time we are going to finish writing the paper, then he will type it, and then begin the editing process.

English Tutoring review by Peter in Vacaville, CA
The student chose the AP English exam from a previous year as the basis for our tutorial this morning. He read through the whole comprehension passage, a 19th century essay on Jeremy Bentham, we then discussed the overall tone and meaning of the passage, then went to the questions supplied by AP. We discussed at some length the options contained in each of the questions, going back to the passage for clarification, and arrived at answers for the first 7. The student has a very good grasp of words and sentences. He guesses in a mostly accurate way when he is not familiar with a word. However, I feel tentatively (it is too soon to be more than tentative) that his speed and detailed accuracy in understanding the words make it difficult for him to slow down and reflect on the more ironic or subtle meanings in the passage as a whole. That is something we shall focus on in a later session. Tomorrow we shall, at the student's request, work on the composition of an essay.

English Tutoring review by Andrew in Vacaville, CA
The student and I had a great session today. We debriefed about his experience at camp. While there, he wrote a very impressive report in Spanish (with a remarkable degree of fluency) about the Spanish basketball league. He spent the rest of our time working on his summer writing assignment. He is steadily getting closer to a final draft, but there is still some work yet to be done. Today, he largely focused on reforming his third and final paragraph, and I believe that the changes he made were very strong.
