The student got through 18 problems today. One thing that he has to do is read and understand the problem before deciding on an answer. He is going to read some of the problems that we will be working on Friday.

We started today's session with a topic for conversation. The topic was happiness. The student and I discussed what it means for him, and others, to be happy. He then read two passages and answered the questions which followed. We also worked on grammar, which included prepositions. He did some writing about the places of interest a tourist should visit when in Beijing. We will be meeting again on Thursday.

I discussed organization issues and strategies with both students. I helped Student H create an organization strategy she thought would be manageable. She and I went over her science homework and she worked on some spelling. Student J and I worked on his algebra homework and reviewed some concepts they addressed in the class earlier in the week.

Tutoring review by Benjamin in Oakley, CA
We covered vocabulary and reading comprehension. The student did very well, as we have done this before. We tried skimming the article this time first then trying to answer the questions. Previously we tried reading it fully then answering and reading the questions and skimming for the answers. Both skimming techniques work better than reading fully. There was progression with the practice I assigned, but she will try to adhere to the amount of practice I suggested this week.

Tutoring review by Liban in Oakley, CA
We finished reviewing advanced application of derivatives for an upcoming exam. We reviewed application of the first/second derivative test as well as definitions and purposes. After going through some examples, we then reviewed maximization/minimization problems, making sure he understood how to identify them and solve them. We ended the session going over implicit differentiation and identifying when/how to use it. The student takes the exam on Monday.

Tutoring review by Sarah in Oakley, CA
I met with the student to continue reviewing for his final test on Tuesday. He felt confident about all of the problems except for the ones involving radicals and complicated exponent problems. We went over solving radical expressions, rationalizing the denominator, and converting between radical and exponent form. Once we had finished this portion of the review, he asked to go over the Pythagorean Theorem and the distance formula. We finished the review session by going over the composition of functions. He also reported that he had received a 90% on his last quiz.
