Mr. D. was able to keep my daughter engaged and interested the entire session. He made her feel confident with reading. She stated that he was the "best teacher in the world". What year in?

I want to thank VT for connecting me with my English tutor. I'm a 49 yr old that enrolled back in college to complete my degree and I was having the most difficult time meeting the demands of my writing assignments. But fortunately, I was matched with an educator that has made what seemed hopeless in my efforts to write academic papers effectively a piece of cake.

I'm very grateful to have found VT. They made the difference between a pass and fail grade for my son. English was one of his most challenging classes and with Varsity Tutors he passed the course. I'm forever grateful.

Do they have an IEP or 504 plan? (We have tutors that specialize in learning differences)

The tutor that was paired with my daughter was perfect and fits Bella's needs. Bella struggles with attention and has been on a 504 plan for years. The tools used, the interaction and flexibility are priceless. I was hesitant at first but now I'd do it again and I recommend Varsity Tutors!!

Session Summaries by English Tutors

English Tutoring review by Daniel in Farmington Hills, MI
We went over grammar most specifically in regards to a new piece of writing done by the student. She is getting much better at identifying mechanical issues with writing and is beginning to show signs of quick proofreading. We went over one paragraph, and she will go back and re-edit the paper with new grammatical techniques for next time. I taught grammar - pluperfect/ perfect/ past tense and how to use them in writing, and the student picked those up very quickly.

The student worked on some first grade reading selections and a second grade selection. She did very well and has gained a lot of confidence in reading aloud. We also worked on writing and practicing letter formation and properly using small and capital letters.

The student and I worked today in our second to last session on word identification by playing a bingo game. I made a word list for him and he used the list to identify words and find them on the bingo board and color them in with colored pencils. We spelled them together as he did this. We then made a "menu" of his favorite foods and labeled them (many of the words on the menu were also on the bingo game). He finished a word search we started last week where he labeled different animals. Additionally, we came up with many different words for each letter of his name, and spelled them out together. He was able to earn a prize for his cooperation and good work. Next week, I plan for the student and I to review all he has learned in our sessions together.

English Tutoring review by Safia in Farmington Hills, MI
We went over thesis and some parts of a narrative essay. The student made multiple improvements and corrections throughout the paper and we added new ideas together. We also discussed imagery and details within the paper. We exchanged ideas on how student wanted to approach his story and make sure it was in compliance to the rubric given by instructor. He was very positive, mature and polite. He responded well to the help he was receiving.

The student and I read about 14 pages to finish the current chapter of Interpreter of Maladies. We paused frequently to talk about character motivations and to predict what would happen next in the story. This chapter presented some of the most difficult characters to analyze in the book, but our discussions combined with a summary and free write were intended to help us makes sense of the events in the chapter and explore the central themes more in depth. He said that he would finish the free write from the previous chapter in preparation for our next session.

English Tutoring review by Alex in Farmington Hills, MI
We split our time between EE research and preparation of the student's college admissions essays. With regard to her EE, we've begun categorizing all of the research she has done into central themes that will be the building blocks of her paper. We also discussed the key criteria for evaluating future research. For her college admissions essays, we narrowed down her final topic and discussed the narrative arc that she'll use in writing it out. We've also established next steps for moving forward with both her EE and admissions essays, and are tentatively planning on meeting next week.
