When I was a student, I totally misunderstood the teaching position. From my perspective, teachers simply appeared at 7:40, at the strike of a bell, and disappeared at 3:00, with a strike of the same bell. These automatons materialized purely for pedagogical purposes, then evaporated when their time had run out. Of course, the reality of their situation was always much different. Nearly all teachers work tirelessly for their students, rarely thinking about much other than teaching--especially in their first few years. (I know, because I became a first-time teacher.) When I began teaching, this knowledge spiraled me into a state of profound reflection. For the first time, I took seriously all of the pressures on this position--out of school political fighting, in school political fighting, funding shortages, etc. It was not clear to me at the time, but teachers do one of the most difficult jobs and receive the least amount of respect for it--not to mention a salary that rarely reflects their efforts and impact. For me, tutoring excises some of these political issues, allowing me to focus entirely upon the task at hand--instructing one student on a particular subject. It's liberating and fun and incredibly rewarding.

I recently finished a PhD at the University of London in the UK, where I taught freshman and sophomore English literature and writing for three years. I love teaching and tutoring English literature, especially the challenge of exciting a student's interest in something they never thought they would like (one of my proudest achievements is getting young male students to enjoy writing about Jane Austen). As a teacher though, I became most passionate about supporting students to develop their writing and essay skills so that they could reach their full potential and truly succeed at college and beyond. My style is supportive and encouraging. I firmly believe that with the right explanation, students can become confident and successful in writing, understanding technical terminology and developing their own arguments. I help students realize that the essay form can work for them, as a way to communicate their ideas effectively. I take students seriously and treat them with respect. Before my doctorate, I studied English to Masters level at the University of Exeter (in the southwest of England). I have also worked in politics, education policy and research, which has given me experience of using a variety of communication and writing styles. In my spare time I enjoy hiking and canoeing, reading and travelling.

I am passionate about education and helping each of my students to reach their full potential. I also have prior experience teaching students of a variety of ages both in the classroom and on a one-on-one basis. I completed my undergraduate degree in Middle Eastern Studies at Columbia University in May 2015. During the course of my studies, I taught English as a second language to Palestinian refugees in southern Lebanon, where I led an intermediate English class and a creative writing course. In both classes, I had students from a wide range of ages, from the early primary through the late secondary stages of their education. After graduating in 2015, I taught a course on Anglo-American poetry to students from grades 6-12 at the Vasant Valley School in New Delhi, India. At Vasant Valley, I taught over a hundred students about the fundamental components of English-language poetry and introduced them to select poems from several British and American poetic movements. I also helped students strengthen their writing skills through imitation writing exercises. Additionally, I tutored several students outside of class both at Vasant Valley and in southern Lebanon. Through these experiences, I learned to share my passion for learning and intellectual growth with all of the students I worked with.

Tutoring is not just a side job for me- it is a passion. I will do whatever it takes to not only improve your understanding and scores, but to be there as a friend and supporter in whatever you may need because I truly believe that tutoring is the best resource availabIe for so many different students. I currently attend the University of Miami as a Public Health and Human Resources double major while running cross country and track. In addition to running, I love pottery, frozen yogurt, yoga, and going to the beach. My favorite subjects to tutor are SAT, SAT II tests, and algebra, but I am happy to help with almost any course including physics, chemistry, and other types of math.

I graduated from Washington State University with a Bachelor's Degree is Business Management with an emphasis in Human Resources Management. It's a mouthful, I know, but I hope that this degree will help me achieve my goals of being a helper. Management is all well and good, but I truly love working with people and helping them achieve their goals, whatever it may be. Before attending WSU, I went to Spokane Falls Community College where I worked as a peer tutor for math subjects approved up through Calculus I, and also worked one quarter as a Writing Tutor. I loved being there and noticing as the students started to understand the subjects more and more and needed my input less and less. That is my ultimate goal with any student - to impart my knowledge and passion in such a way that they understand the subject matter and eventually have no need for me anymore!Outside of tutoring, I am a huge nerd. I love Japanese anime, and attend anime conventions in my spare time. I am very loyal to Nintendo and am currently counting down the time until the next Legend of Zelda game comes out. I also love to read, write, and cuddle with my two Halloween bookend kitties.

As a rising junior at UNC Chapel Hill majoring in English and minoring in Creative Writing, I have a lot of experience with reading and writing. In the past, I interned with Promising Pages, a non-profit organization that teaches underserved children how to read and get enthusiastic about books. I have also volunteered with Hands on Charlotte and Carrboro Elementary to tutor elementary school students. My experience teaching children is extensive, but I have worked with many age groups. I have consistently helped those around me (especially my older brothers) plan, write and edit countless essays and applications. I am eager to tutor new students and help them learn the ins and outs of reading and writing!

I began teaching high school English in Hawaii in 2012 through Teach For America (TFA). TFA is one of the most selective teaching programs in the country accepting just 11% of applicants as of 2011. I finished my first year in the classroom by being chosen to be the youngest AP Language teachers in the state and spearhead the program at my school. I built a curriculum tailored to the students needs and interests and was not afraid to tackle difficult subjects head on through literature and writing. My second year, I was also asked to run the theater program at the school. I worked with the students to write an original musical as well as find creative ways for the students to express themselves. I also coached the cross country and track team at the school - teaching leadership, teamwork, and perseverance.I know I can tailor curriculum to your specific needs and interests. I am not afraid to push for growth while simultaneously creating a nurturing learning environment.
