I am a junior at Brown University majoring in economics and French. I have worked as a tutor and college applications consultant throughout high school and college, both as a freelancer and as a senior consultant for CollegeVine. I tutor a broad range of subjects, but I am most passionate about those closely related to my majors. In my experience, being a great tutor is not just about having a deep knowledge of the subject, but also about being able to inspire and motivate students; I hope to be a mentor to my students. Outside of work and academics, I love reading, running, skiing, and fashion.

I am a professional educator and language enthusiast with a Ph.D. in History, an M.A. in Latin American Studies, and a B.A. in Spanish and International Relations. I have studied, lived, and worked in Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Bolivia and Germany and bring my passion for history, language, and travel to my tutoring and teaching. As an instructor for the History and Spanish & Portuguese Departments at the University of Arizona, and as a freelance English teacher in Germany, I have taught students of all ages, backgrounds, and interests for over a decade. In the history classes I teach, I ask students to think about how global developments in politics, economics, and science have shaped the lives of individuals and societies throughout time. In Spanish, German, and English language courses, I strive to build students’ confidence and make communicating in another language fun! I particularly enjoy tutoring because it allows me to tailor the session to meet students’ unique needs. When I’m not tutoring, I’m writing histories of midwifery and obstetric medicine in Bolivia, translating academic works from German to English, and learning Mandarin. You might also find me climbing rocks on Mt. Lemmon, practicing yoga, or taking very slow, very short “runs” around my neighborhood. I love cooking while listening to podcasts. In my next life, I’d like to be a musician.

When aiding my students with their writing assignments, I experience a certain frustration at their lack of exploration. No matter the nature of the assignment, students are taught to seek the right answer in the most direct manner. In this age driven by state assessments, students are encouraged to find what???s considered to be the correct answer quickly with little room for exploration or a deeper level of critical thinking. Students are often encouraged to get from point A to point B in a quick and efficient manner without stopping to discover along the way. Although students achieve their goal of completing an assignment in a timely manner, the writing that results lacks originality of thought that can only be discovered through exploration. As an adjunct, I stress the importance of exploration for the good of my students??? creative and academic endeavors. These efforts make both of us not only better students, but help to ensure that we can increase of knowledge in all areas of our lives no matter what path they may take. I believe that teachers who demonstrate curiosity and passion about a subject area motivate students to learn. I believe that W.B. Yeats captured the exhilaration of teaching when he wrote: ???Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.???My philosophy of teaching is to create an environment that allows for supervised exploration. I believe that learner-oriented teaching promotes learning that is both purposeful and enduring. However, to really transition from a teacher-centered learning environment to a more learner-centered environment, students must identify learning needs in themselves, and assess their own progress. As an adjunct instructor, I encourage my students to participate in active conversation about literature as well as their own composition process. In my opinion, first year students will benefit more from an instructor who will listen in addition to guide them towards a more cohesive writing style that will last throughout their collegiate and professional careers. In summary, the learning process is enhanced by??? a collegial relationship between teacher and learner??? evident pride in scholarship by the teacher??? challenge of the learner???s knowledge??? clarification of underlying structure by the teacher??? mutual feedback.

In my academic career, I have studied at Miami University, Boston University, and Ohio State University, where I am working on my Ph.D. in Education. I have degrees in both English Literature and English Education, and have taught at the high school and college level over the past 13 years. This combined experience has strengthened my performance as a tutor for students needing help with coursework or testing preparation.Being a teacher is what defines me. For as long as I can remember, I have been driven by my passion for education, and nothing thrills me more than seeing the spark of understanding in my students. Put simply, I do not stop until I've found a way to explain the material in a way that truly makes sense for my students. There's always another way to apporach a topic, and I'm happy to try until we've found what works. I credit this for why I am fortunate enough to be a top-rated teacher in the top-ranked school in my state.

I am an undergraduate student at the University of Chicago majoring in Classics and Theatre. However, my college uses the core curriculum and as a result, I've had a well-rounded, eclectic education covering everything from math to fine arts. I've won awards in community service, dance, and film, but most notably, 20 writing prizes before I reached eighteen. I was a National Merit Semi-Finalist in high school and I've had a passion for education and the art of learning since I was a child. I hope to instill in my students the love of amassing knowledge, excelling in your studies, and walking out of a test feeling like you rocked it. I especially had a passion for the Critical Reading and the Writing portions of the SAT's and the SAT 2 in Literature. I have teaching experience with everything from stand-up comedy to Emergency Medical Services to tap dancing, and I've been told that I am unmatched in my enthusiasm. In my free time, I like to perform sketch and improv comedy, dance, play the banjo, and volunteer in my local hospital.

It goes without saying that being an effective tutor requires a firm grasp of the subject and the ability to explain complex ideas in clear and intuitive ways. However, as I have learned during my years of tutoring experience, a good educator also needs to have the ability to engage pupils and to give them the tools that they need to succeed on their own. This means not only teaching students the material, but also familiarizing them with effective learning strategies and helping them develop strong study skills--all in a way that is supportive and which capitalizes on their existing strengths.I tutor at the middle school, high school, and college levels. My primary focus is on verbal subjects, including critical reading, essay-writing, and SAT/GRE prep. I aim to help students develop the strong language and analytical skills that they need to excel in these areas. In addition, I offer math and German-language tutoring.
