I am a graduate of Kent State University with a Bachelors of Science in Secondary Education, majoring in English and Theater. I also graduated from The National Shakespeare Conservatory's two-year actor training program, and studied acting at London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts and completed the Screenwriting program at New York University. Originally from the Cleveland area, I have been in New York for more than 20 years, working extensively in the entertainment and legal industries. I teach acting, voice, and movement to teens and adults, having worked at CUNY's York College in Queens, Manhattan's Breakthrough Studios, as well as private instruction. I did employee training and evaluation in the legal industry for 15 years, and currently provide contract services to companies upgrading their computer systems. While I tutor a broad rangeof subjects, I am most passionate about acting and writing. People are more creative and expressive than they give themselves credit for, and I love helping a student of any age discover that they do, in fact, have what it takes for acting, public speaking, writing, or any other form of creative expression. My approach starts with what the student already knows, and then pushes her or him outside of the comfort zone to discover previously unrealized creativity. This approach works well in other subject areas also, helping students to think outside the box and use creative problem solving abilities for subjects not traditionally thought of as "creative." In my spare time I enjoy writing screenplays, playing my ukulele (I have two of them!) and performing with my friends at karaoke.

Growing up, most kids are defined by the sports they love to play or the instruments they like to play. Some kids love to sing, act, dance, draw, paint, or participate in other activities. I, however, was always defined simply by my love of learning. I started reading Harry Potter when I was five years old; I was the only child in my Kindergarten class to have private advanced math lessons. When I was unable to sleep, I read trivia books and fun fact encyclopedias. None of this is to brag about my intelligence, rather to demonstrate that all my life, I have had a passion for knowledgeto learn as much as I can. As a tutor, I want to inspire that passion in other children.I attended a competitive private high school, so I am no stranger to people getting tutors in order to succeed. My primary interests are in journalism and the entertainment industry. I love writing, and I write for my schools arts and culture magazine. I'm an undergraduate at Columbia University in New York City, and from this you might think that Varsity has put my profile in the wrong city. They most certainly have not: I am a Houstonian, born and raised, and I'm back in my hometown for the summer. Last year in New York, I worked with Elementary schoolers, helping with preparation for New York State Math and English exams. This summer, I'm looking forward to helping with test-prep for all ages. With the help of some excellent teachers, I myself scored a perfect 2400 on the SAT, helping me get into Columbia, one of the most prestigious universities in the country. Since then, I've wanted to join that elite corps, to help other students conquer standardized testing, complete the college application process, and go further on the road to achieving their dreams. At Columbia, I study Computer Science, but I also have a great passion for the sciences, math, and literature. I enjoy Chemistry and Physics, am very comfortable in math from Pre-Algebra all the way through Calculus I, and have gathered some great insight about the sort of writing that is expected from America's top universities. I love learning of all sorts, and hope to be able to share some of that passion this summer! When I'm not preparing for classes, I enjoy reading the classics, learning new programming languages, and exploring the two wonderful cities I'm so privileged to split my time between.

I've interacted with students from all over the world while working in the high school because we accepted international enrollment and had a robust foreign exchange/study abroad program, so we always had students from Asia, Europe, South America, and Africa on our campus. I am a certified ESL online instructor for students who live here in the U.S., as well as overseas. I'm most proud of the fact that I also home-schooled my own two children for a couple of years, and they both went on to attend top-rated colleges (Cornell University and Mercer University).The subjects I tutor are ESL, reading, writing, basic language arts skills, and History. I believe the ability to communicate well is integral in today's society. Both native and non-native English speakers need good English speaking and writing skills to reach their goals and find success in their lives.
