I'm a non-directive, dynamic writing tutor who's worked with a wide range of comfort levels in a wide range of settings. Which is to say: need help with test prep? Playing catch-up in class? Preparing for presentations or needing to revise a piece of writing? I've helped a lot of tutees in all of these situations and more, and love working collaboratively with anyone looking for assistance.I have 3+ years of tutoring experience, both inside and out of tutoring centers; high levels of success with tutoring; and a bevy of professional accolades and publications across a wide range of fields, including critical essays, poetry, and public presentation. I'm fluent in a number of academic styles, and am trained to resolve crises and stressors inside tutoring sessions, as well. I can't wait to meet you!

Throughout my undergraduate education in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Notre Dame, I have developed a mastery of various subjects, but also a desire to share this knowledge with others. Because of this, I am enrolled in the Mechanical Engineering PhD program at Rice University which will begin Fall 2020, and I am hoping to return to academia as a professor after earning my PhD. In the meantime, I am looking to share my passion for gaining knowledge, specifically in STEM, by educating the up and coming members of such a great field. I have experience tutoring both Calculus and Physics at Notre Dame, as well as experience as a Student Assistant for Differential Equations and Mechanics. I believe the key to learning is much deeper than learning to solve problems and that seeking knowledge is one of the best means for personal improvement.

I am a graduate of the University of Wisconsin Law School. I received my undergraduate degree - B.A. in English Literature and Secondary Education - from Benedictine University in Lisle, Illinois. My previous teaching/tutoring experience includes a semester of student teaching 11th grade students in English at James B. Conant High School and engaging in one-on-one tutoring in Reading and Language Arts. Additionally, I do possess some experience working with ESL students. I am equally passionate about teaching Literature (including Reading and Writing skills) as well as Social Sciences to students. Though teaching writing skills can be challenging at times, I find the effort to be worthwhile because I love watching students experience a sense satisfaction and achievement when they finally master the ability to successfully express themselves through their writing. My teaching and tutoring experiences have taught me that everyone learns at their own pace and that it is essential that an instructor possess patience and understanding in order to enable a student to learn successfully. Additionally, I am a strong believer in the philosophy that "practice makes perfect." No amount of studying theory or concepts will provide a student with the insight as to their strengths or weaknesses in a particular subject that actually requires a student to actively apply those theories or concepts to a learning exercise and/or problem. When I am not attending to the obligations of work and home, I have a number of interests I like to dabble in. I am an art lover and enjoy checking out the various collections at museums both in nearby areas and abroad. I am an amateur photographer and in high school I learned how to develop black and white photos in the darkroom. Additionally, I took my first screen printing class last year and quickly fell in love with this particular medium. I am hoping to take an intermediate level of screen printing sometime in the near future. I also love to travel and have been fortunate enough to visit some great places over the past few years. Next on my list of countries to visit include Spain, Portugal and Italy. I am still an avid reader, my favorite genres being historical fiction and biographies.

10th Grade Writing Tutor • +26 Subjects
Hello, my name is Monica and one of my favorite things to do is to tutor and teach! I wake up every day enthusiastic to learn and contribute to a greater world. I have been tutoring for a long time. I am the oldest child and I have 2 younger siblings who I teach everything I learn. We are older now, so I do not get as much time to hang out with them as they are onto their own schooling and work. I graduated undergrad with a BA in Psychology and Minor in Business. I love the sciences as I think it is fascinating what we and the world are made of, and to learn about these things, gives us a better understanding of who we are and where we are headed. I also spent a few years working as an accountant. After I saved up enough money to help my family out, I went back to school to get a Post Baccalaureate Certificate in Premedical Sciences. I also am an EMT. I have worked on the ambulances and in the hospitals and I find taking care of others extremely rewarding. For the next few years, I will be attending medical school. Along this entire journey, I have been tutoring students of a wide span of ages, from middle school to high school to college to adult (students in my own classes). I have a tremendous amount of patience combined with a goal-oriented mentality. I find a ton of joy in teaching others the things I've learned. I understand every student is different, so I approach every student differently depending on their needs and persona. I want every student I come in contact with to find the joy and realization of how enjoyable education truly is.

After completing a self-designed major in Latin America: Language, Literature and Culture from Antioch College, I obtained Master's degrees in Latin American Studies and Community and Regional Planning from the University of New Mexico. Over the years, I have worked as an elementary ESL teacher, an urban planner, and in my current position as an educational researcher. Furthermore, for the last four years, I have taught test prep instruction for the GRE and GMAT exams at the University of New Mexico, and have taken on private tutees in these subjects as well. I find this work to be immensely gratifying. I love to watch students grow in their knowledge and gain the confidence to reach their educational and career goals. I meet students "where they are," whether they just need to brush up on a few rusty skills, or must tackle major concepts that they never quite grasped in the first place. I find that many students deal with test anxiety or have mental blocks about certain topics (hello Math!), and I enjoy working with them to overcome those challenges as needed. (It doesn't hurt that I'm also a certified childbirth doula; it may sound strange, but some of those same breathing, relaxation, and visualization techniques can be surprisingly effective when it comes to taking standardized tests). Former students describe me as patient, compassionate, and skilled at making tough concepts easy to grasp. I love to watch them succeed in their educational journeys, and I look forward to helping you along your path, too!

I spent the first 6 years of my life in Denmark, but have since lived in England, Germany, and now the United States. I was fortunate to become fluent in Danish, German, and English along the way. I recently graduated summa cum laude from the University of South Florida Honors College with a degree in Biomedical Sciences.I have tutored my peers in a wide range of math, chemistry, and foreign language classes throughout both high school and college, but my subject of choice is definitely test prep. Every student has the potential to do well on the ACT! My method of teaching is focused on finding the learning styles and test-taking strategies that are best-suited to the individual student, instead of a one-size-fits-all approach. My goal is ultimately to equip students with the skills to succeed not just on a test, but in all their future academic endeavors.

Anatomy & Physiology Tutor • +5 Subjects
I am currently studying Medicinal and Biological Chemistry at Palm Beach Atlantic University in West Palm Beach, Florida, where I have just finished my sophomore year. After graduation, I hope to attend medical school, and one day become a physician. For over a year, I have been tutoring my peers in chemistry and anatomy & physiology through a peer tutoring program at my university. My favorite subject to tutor is by far chemistry, because it is extremely rewarding to help a student understand a difficult concept and then watch them be able to work though problems and apply those concepts on their own. I believe that students can only succeed if they understand the purpose of what they are learning, so I always make it a point to explain the "why" behind important concepts and ideas. This way, the student can develop a strong foundation of knowledge and can become more confident in their understanding of the subject. In my free time, I enjoy working out, reading exciting novels, and exploring my home city of Miami, Florida.

I first got into tutoring as a member of my high school's National Honor Society. The top students were encouraged to impart their knowledge through mandatory tutoring sessions. I found that I enjoyed helping others understand subject material and concepts. I felt like I was serving a greater purpose.Outside of tutoring I enjoy soccer, basketball, and ultimate frisbee. I am a big fan of the New York Yankees and New York Knicks. I am a sophomore at Cornell University, and I am planning to major in computer science.I sincerely believe that everyone is smart enough to understand everything, but each person needs a different amount of time and effort to get there.
