The jump from picture books to chapter books is significant—there are fewer illustrations, longer passages to read, and more complex plots to track. Unknown words are a major barrier to comprehension at this level, but tutors don't just drill vocabulary lists. For example, understanding the difference between "walked" and "stomped" helps students grasp a character's mood. Third graders begin recognizing that stories have a beginning, middle, and end, but many struggle to see how events connect or why they matter.
