I believe that everyone has a story. We can enjoy them all if we're willing to listen and just "be" in the moment. There are many times when I shake my head and think to myself "only me". I am a graduate of Yale University, where I earned my Bachelor of Arts in History. I received two prizes for my senior thesis, and was a Yale Journalism Scholar. At Yale, I worked as a French tutor for two years and served as a Sports Editor at the Yale Daily News. After college, I served for two years as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the West African nation of Guinea-Conakry. There, I taught 5th grade full-time in French to 60 students in a village elementary school and tutored local high school students in English. My time in Guinea cemented my love of working with children and teenagers, and I am currently pursuing a career as a teacher. I tutor a broad range of subjects, but am most passionate about French and History/Social Studies. As a tutor, I don't simply answer questions; I would rather give students the guidance and support to help them find the answers themselves. I look forward to serving as a friend and mentor to my students - I know that they need to feel comfortable to take full advantage of our sessions. I enjoy playing soccer, listening to music, writing and traveling the world.

My academic work in the public school system includes a long-term substitute in high school and middle school. I was a Reading/ELA tutor at a Mano O' Mano elementary school. In this role, I engaged and motivated struggling students using creative teaching techniques. At the conclusion of the year, several students I worked with were performing at grade-level, which is a monumental achievement. I have also worked with academically challenged students supporting them in mentoring and coaching them to complete their high school curriculum to graduate. I have also worked as a private tutor working with students in reading.Professionally, I am an accomplished education and business professional who is committed to strategic collaboration of the global business and culturally diverse language-learning environment. I have extensive experience in business development. As a corporate trainer and human resource professional, my range of expertise includes training, development, analysis and design, policies and procedures, employee relations.I am a graduate of the University of Connecticut with a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education and Reading. I hold a Leadership Certificate and an MBA in Strategic and Organizational Management from Jack Welch School of Business -Sacred Heart University.

During my experience tutoring children in Japan, I learned that I love helping students be the best they can be. I received my degree from the University of Redlands in Asian Studies with a minor in English, and I hope to continue my studies in English or Literature in the near future. As such, I focus on tutoring English subjects for the most part, and it is my favorite subject to tutor! I hope to spend some time in the next few years teaching English as a second language in Japan, something I have already done and loved. My tutoring style is to work with my students toward a common goal and to help them learn to the best of their ability. The classes or sessions that I teach tend to be more involved, rather than just a lecture for my students, as I believe --and it has been proven in studies-- that students learn the best in more discussion-based settings.

I have been a practicing attorney for the past thirty-six years having graduated from the law school at American University. My first experience with tutoring was with my own children, who both have attended Ivy League colleges. I was able to help my daughter increase her Verbal SAT score by over 100 points. I have been working with Varsity Tutors for almost three years and have tutored many students for the SSAT on elementary, middle and upper school levels. Most of my students have substantially increased their scores enabling them to be admitted to the schools they wanted. I have had very successful results by working with my students by analyzing their skills and adapting our sessions to their favored methods of learning. I have been approved to tutor in the LSAT and look forward to assisting future lawyers in reaching their dreams in an area in which I am quite familiar.

Education is the only way for people to move forward in any area of life. Education is a universal commodity that causes us to transform our lives into something useful. It is the highway to new discoveries and sets the foundation for new paths. Being inspired by my teachers, I decided to devote my life to teaching and developing new techniques of teaching and learning that's helpful for others in our diverse world. As a high school student, I decided to go into the health occupations vocational program because I wanted to help others. As a college student, I decided to become a teacher because it suited my passion, mission (to help others) and matched well with my personality. Through my efforts I wanted lives to be enriched, and sometimes totally chanced because of our encounters. As an educator I have seen so many lives enhanced through education, individual accountability, and firm concern. As an administrator I have seen many adults and students lives enriched because I merely cared and would not give up on them. As a tutor I will do my very best to continue helping others by utilizing teaching strategies learned in the past 11 years.

While obtaining my Bachelors at Brown University (in Geology) and my Masters at Colorado State University (in Watershed Science), I have uncovered a love not only for academic topics I learned, but for teaching those topics to those around me. Most recently, I was a Teaching Assistant for a watershed course at Colorado State University, in which I enjoyed leading laboratory sessions and working through problem sets with undergraduate students. I have a long (6 year) history of tutoring students from Elementary to High School ages as well - in Music, English, Math, and SATs. These experiences have all been incredibly rewarding, and I look forward to meeting new students and guiding them toward those "aha!" moments!
