After graduating from undergrad in California I came to Austin and in the two years I have been here I have started a professional acting career in films, plays, commercials and other fun arenas. I love teaching and learning in just about any subject but I am most fond of languages, literature History - there's just so much humanity and adventure and passion and awesomeness and...we'll you catch my drift :) I have taught and tutored children as young as 5 up through college aged folk as well. My parents are both professors so I guess I was bitten at an early age with the education bug. Like them, I think that the keys to unlocking the most fruitful learning experiences are: Patience, Passion and Listening - on the both the part of the student and the instructor. Its my pleasure to inspire and stir these qualities in a learning environment. The interdisciplinary nature of acting is something that carries over into my tutoring so if we are studying Spanish there is good chance music will make it into our lessons OR if we are looking at History food, culture or travel may well be part of what we look at, etcetera. When I run into free time I love to play classical guitar, listen to music, watch a play/film/TV program or write songs.

I have been a classroom teacher since 2013. I received a Bachelor of Science in Social Science Education and a Bachelor of Arts in History from Oakwood University. I started my teaching career in the Republic of Guinea, where I taught English at a private school. On returning to the states, I began teaching a wide array of subjects. I developed a passion for math and English along the way. At the same time, I also started tutoring before and after school. First, to help students prepare for standardized tests, then to help those struggling with reading. I loved tutoring both subjects. I also quickly realized I preferred working with small groups. Seeing my students grow academically through tutoring is one of my proudest achievements. I teach/tutor so students can unlock doors to better opportunities they would miss out on otherwise. I desire to do my best to help students achieve their best. As a lifelong learner, I am pursuing a Masters in Education and learning to play guitar.

I grew up in northeast Seattle and attended Nathan Hale High School. I went on to the University of Washington, where I graduated magna cum laude in 2009 with a double major in English and History, with a focus on history of ideas and history of science. After extensive traveling I returned to the University of Washington to pursue a doctoral degree in English literature. I began my doctoral studies in 2012 and received my master's degree in 2014.I focus on poetry but study many forms of Anglophone literature, from drama to novels to contemporary experimental literature. My courses are interdisciplinary by design and emphasize the skills of careful reading, precise analysis, and logical inference through grammar instruction, vocabulary development, research skills, and composition. This year I received the Joan Webber Prize for Outstanding Teaching. My research is integral to my teaching and I enjoy making literature relevant to my student's lives and ambitions. Helping students work through challenging material individually, whether during office hours or in mid-quarter conferences, is the most valuable and enriching aspect of teaching at the University of Washington. In addition to extensive teaching experience, I have also worked as an assistant editor at Modern Language Quarterly: A Journal of Literary History. My job duties included copyediting for grammar and style and managing the day-to-day operations of the journal. As a consequence I am a skilled editor and proofreader, with an ability to facilitate a writer's own expression and assist them in developing their written materials. I have also worked as a freelance academic editor, and edited materials that are now in print. My background in teaching and editing have prepared me to tutor in all areas pertaining to literature and culture. MLQ publishes essays on literature from around the world and across history, that draw on diverse intellectual and philosophical traditions. My focus on style, vocabulary, grammar, and inferential argumentation make me an excellent tutor in reading comprehension and analytical writing. Standardized test preparation involves the sequential development and mastery of the skills I have developed through doctoral education, research, teaching and editing.I love teaching and imparting a life-long interest in reading, literature, philosophy, and scientific inquiry. The first principle of my teaching philosophy is eduction: I want to draw forth what you are passionate about and help you to make your goals a reality.

Teaching and educating young people has been my passion since I was a young child. I taught in Memphis, TN for almost 13 years. My first year was in 5th grade and my remaining years were with kindergarten students. I have a deep desire to help young learners discover their ability to read and understand with meaning. I obtained my Bachelors in Elementary Education from the University of Memphis and then went on to complete my Master's Degree in Reading and Literacy. I'm currently a professionally licensed educator in the state of Tennessee. My experience is valuable to young readers, as I have strong skillsets in pinpointing strengths and weakness with readers of many ages. My expertise allows me to drive instruction to meet students' individual needs where they are and build on their prior knowledge. I believe that every child has the ability to build and grow their literacy skills and become lifelong learners. My expertise would focus on building strong foundations in the pillars of literacy: Phonics, Phonemic Awareness, Fluency, Vocabulary and Comprehension.

I have an extensive and highly successful record of mentoring elementary, middle school, high school, undergraduate and graduate level students (from a career spanning over 25 years). I have taught high school students, undergraduates and graduate courses, as well as medical school coursework.I am also able to help with writing and proofreading applications, reports and essays in all fields (e.g., history, English) in addition to the biological sciences. In addition, I can help you become a better test taker. We can meet at a local library or elsewhere, and on-line tutoring is also a possibility. Let me help you increase your knowledge, your confidence, and help you better prepare for exams!

I am a dedicated, published poet with an MFA in Creative Writing (Poetry) from Vermont College of Fine Arts. Poetry is a grace. Poetry is a gift. It can change the way we see the world. It can help to understand the questions that baffle us all. It can help us celebrate, rage, grieve and ponder. Poetry can create music from the sound and texture of language. It can help us explore life and see beauty in the the ordinary. I want to make literature and writing adventurous and vastly enjoyable. I want to share my endless enthusiasm for the remarkable universe of contemporary authors. Writing calls me, and has done so since I was 17. Writing can give us comfort, encouragement, validation and fulfillment. It can give us the tools to communicate our deepest feelings.

When I was growing up my grandmother frequently told me that getting an education was my ticket to a better life. She was right and now that I have my ticket I want to help others get their own. Learning wasn't always easy for me because I am a kinesthetic learner. I had to learn to adapt and through that process, I have gained the skills to tutor others. My tutoring philosophy is to learn what styles best fit the tutee and modify the information to fit that style. I tutor so I can help others set themselves up for a better life.Currently, I am a college student at the University of Michigan- Ann Arbor majoring in Movement Science in the School of Kinesiology and minoring in dance. After undergrad, I hope to go to medical school to continue helping others. In my free time, I enjoy dancing, reading, and traveling.
