Teaching is an important part of my life. I recently retired after 20 years of teaching elementary students with learning disabilities. I was able to develop a strong relationship with my students by working with them in small groups over several years. I often had to play the role of detective as I attempted to uncover skill deficits that made their learning difficult.I began my teaching career fresh out of college as an English teacher in a high school in McMinnville, Tennessee. I loved teaching what I loved so much--reading and writing--but I was concerned that so many of my students lacked basic reading and writing skills. I left that teaching job to go to graduate school and earn my master's degree in English. Rather than returning to the classroom after graduate school, I spent 9 years as a writer/editor at the Nashville Banner and Vanderbilt's Alumni Publications. It was while I was writing a story about a special education study at Peabody College that I got the urge to go back to the classroom as a special education teacher. I'm looking forward to using my teaching and writing skills as a tutor in this next phase of my life.

Hello! My name is Jessie. I graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from UIC. I am also an occupational therapy practitioner. I love to work with children. I currently am working at a therapeutic clinic for children with developmental disabilities. The children I work with are from the ages 3-10 years of age. I am a fun and outgoing person who likes to engage children in learning. While tutoring I always will do something educational and fun/motivating activities to ensure they are learning but still engaged. It is helpful if children tell me what they like for activities so I can incorporate their hobbies into our time together. I enjoy music, cooking, and cleaning. I am a very organized and detailed person. Being patient is one of my good traits. Contact me if you need a responsible and caring tutor.

As an experienced tutor in English, GED studies, reading and writing, I am always optimistic, invested in my student's development and empathize with their learning needs. In order for me to bridge their learning gap, I first learn how my students learn best. My skills in literacy, training and development have provided me with vital tools needed to raise my student's achievements beyond their own expectations, by using challenging and rewarding lessons. I am considered to be calm, patient and motivating. Always telling my students, "Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes it's the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, I will try again tomorrow."

Before embarking on my first overseas teaching job, my Mom looked at me and said, "You're the right person for this." Thus began a journey of teaching, learning and global discovery that was to shape the person I am today. I get back so much more than I give, and I give a tremendous amount, making sure my students get what they need, and more. Tutoring provides a more personal approach to education, in the spirit of friendliness, sharing and the broadening of horizons.
