Hi! I'm a recent graduate of Wesleyan University, where I received my Bachelor's of Arts in European Studies, with a focus on history, literature and philosophy, specifically 20th century history and colonial studies. I also spent a semester abroad in France and went on to work there for several months. Since graduation, I have traveled extensively throughout Europe and am currently working several part-time jobs in New Haven with hopes of pursuing a career in urban development. I am passionate about learning and helping others realize their full potential!

I find teaching to be like an offshore fishing trip for tuna. There is a lot of preparation, a long trip is to be expected, but there is nothing like the excitement when you are in the moment and the pay-off at the end of the day is priceless. As a teacher, I bring interest, wonderment, and a sense of accomplishment to the students. Positive behavior support is at the foundation for all of my lessons. I feel that the students deserve to know when they are mastering a skill as well as praise for giving it a try. When looking for a solution to a problem from my students I find there is no wrong answer, only steps toward to learning something new. Finally, I believe the atmosphere between the children and teacher should be light-hearted with structure having an air of safety to blanket the class.

In eighth grade, I decided that I wanted to become a teacher. The learning process fascinated me and I wanted to share my knowledge and enthusiasm with future students. Upon entering the field of education, I quickly realized that teaching was much more than bestowing information upon a room of students, to be soaked up by their sponge-like brains. I came to understand that teaching is far more complex, demanding, and rewarding than I ever imagined.Like teaching in a classroom, tutoring involves more than academic content. Tutors must instruct and reinforce skills that equip students for lifelong learning and success. Tutoring is really about meeting a child where she or he is and guiding them to where they need to be for optimal learning.I am a great tutor because I understand that each student learns as an individual and that learning occurs best when tutors utilize research-based teaching strategies and best practice methods. I employ a variety of strategies that account for student interests, learning styles, and abilities.

This fall, I will transfer into Reed College to study philosophy as a junior. I have taken the last four years off of school to travel, handle some medical issues, work hard, and do some soul-searching. I enjoy reading and writing, being outside and active, cooking and eating good food, playing guitar, climbing rock and ice, and being alive. I am extremely passionate about learning, and love to get people excited about it as well. I like to say that I teach "maieutically;" which comes from the Greek and means "to midwife, or aid in giving birth," in this sense, to an idea. I prefer to ask the student lots of guiding questions, instead of didactically infusing them with answers. This method results in what I like to call "intellectual exhilaration," in other words, the student is excited because they were able to create something out of themselves, instead of being imbued with the ideas of others something sort of rare for children, teens, and college students at times. I loved it immediately; I had found my true passion: working with and helping children. I started teaching students in various environments and to students of all levels.I have assisted teaching in a school, substitute taught for grades k-12 in all subject areas, tutored at a center for kids with special needs, tutored on-one-on in homes, taught lessons in an after-school program, and managed a team of tutors. During the 2019-2020 school year I had the privilege to be a kindergarten teacher in a bilingual private school. Before that I have tutored various grade levels for more than 10 years. My favorite part was getting to know and learn from so many different types of students. I strongly believe in an equity built learning environment. This also means I understand that every student has individual learning needs and students learn best in different ways.
