I am a two-time graduate of James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, receiving a bachelor's degree in English in 2008 and a master's degree in secondary education in 2009. Since graduation, I have worked teaching high school English and coaching wrestling in a relatively poor and rural district just south of Richmond. Though I am fully qualified and capable of tutoring any subject related to English, one of the things I have enjoyed the most success with as a teacher is preparation for standardized tests. I also very much enjoy teaching British literature and the writing process. There is no better feeling to me than seeing the gratitude in a student's face when he or she exceeds expectations and can go on to complete the next step in his or her educational journey. Outside of teaching, I am a rabid baseball fan (Let's go, Mets!), I love going to concerts, and I enjoy hanging out with my cats.

I am a graduate from the George Washington University in Washington, D.C. with a degree in Political Science and History, and I am currently hoping to be going to law school in the fall of 2014. I have tutored many subjects so far but by far my favorite subject is History. I have found that by examining what humans have done we can come closer to understanding what we are. My mother is a high school science teacher, and ever since 9th grade I have been tutoring, although my interests shifted quite frequently. In college, I was able to both study and tutor Politics and History in probably the best city for those subjects, our nation's capital. While I have also tutored subjects such as Math, Science, Economics, and ESL, I have found that Politics and History provide a unique possibility for students to go beyond simply absorbing knowledge, giving them a chance to express and integrate their own opinions and world views into their learning. In my free time, I enjoy basketball, hiking, biking, hanging out with friends, and reading books on political philosophy and history.

My background is primarily in biology and the life sciences, and in addition to my veterinary program, I also work as part of a research team in comparative oncology that develops treatments for cancer that benefit both humans and animals. I am passionate about increasing public understanding of science, and am happy to work with students of any level of science education.I also believe strongly that written and verbal communication skills are essential to success in any academic path, and want to help students refine these skills so that they can bring their thoughts and ideas into the world with clarity and power!In my spare time, I enjoy being outdoors hiking, biking, and nordic skiing. I also enjoy rock climbing, horseback riding, yoga, and hanging out with my cat.

I am a current sophomore pursuing a degree in Biology from Brown University, as well as a certificate in Hispanic Studies. I love to help others find the joy in learning, and have tutored high school students in math, Spanish, biology, and chemistry for three years. I also have coordinated and staffed a free summer camp for under-resourced children in my area, focusing on environmental and natural sciences, so I am highly experienced in producing engaging and interactive lessons for a wide range of ages. My lab internships at Duke University, Brown University, and UNC-Chapel Hill, as well as college coursework, have further amplified my interest in biology and chemistry. Additionally, I work as a volunteer medical interpreter at Clnica Esperanza in Rhode Island, and conduct administrative and check-in procedures with Spanish-speaking patients. This opportunity, as well as the upper-level Spanish culture and literature courses I have taken at Brown, have honed my fluency in the language, and I would love to help you develop strong Spanish reading, writing, and conversational abilities. I also have taken a multitude of standardized tests, including AP, SAT, and SAT Subject Tests, and offer test preparation in these areas. Generally, my tutoring style focuses on developing effective thought processes over memorization, so that students are able to apply and enjoy what they learn. Outside of academia, I play the saxophone and piano, and prior experience with tutoring middle-school woodwind students has prepared me for additional tutoring work. I love the outdoors, and hike, bike, and kayak whenever I can! I'm also an avid reader, and enjoy attempting new culinary creations.
