AP Spanish Literature and Culture Tutor • +65 Subjects

Hello, my name is Jacob and I am a friendly and patient tutor of multiple subject areas. I graduated from Columbia University in 2013 with my B.A. in Political Science and Spanish/Latin American Studies. I focused my political studies on International Relations and Comparative Politics. As a student of Spanish/Latin American Studies, I analyzed the cultural nuances of the worlds Spanish-speaking diaspora. I am fluent in Spanish and have studied the language for more than ten years. While at Columbia, I also studied social movements, political theory, history, literature and globalization. In addition to my studies, I have seven years of tutoring experience as well as one year of teaching experience. In high school, I volunteered as an ESL tutor. In college, I volunteered as a homework tutor (geometry, English literature, grammar, biology and persuasive essay writing) as well as a college mentor. As a college mentor, I edited college essays for high school seniors and conducted workshops on interview etiquette, scholarships and time management skills. After graduating from college, I taught 3rd grade literature, writing and social justice at a rigorous charter school in New York City. As a 3rd grade teacher, I wrote curricula for the social justice class and filled in at the 2nd grade level as well. Furthermore, I have experience preparing lesson plans and teaching classes on civic engagement, social justice and social inequality at the high school and college levels.

I received my M.A. from DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois and my B.A. from the University of San Francisco. My scholarly interest tends towards European and American History, specifically the construction of gender through the lens of consumerism and nationalism. As far as tutoring I have lectured and taught throughout the course of my graduate studies on top of my experience working with first-generation college students through TRiO Student Support Services and the McNair Scholars Program, federal education opportunity outreach initiatives. My tutoring focus ranges from working with students to address educational gaps in structuring papers and arguments to assisting them with articles that are up for publication through various undergraduate journals. I love to study and tutor the areas of history, literature, and any field that deploys the use of critical analysis. I have noticed that students generally prefer to learn through a holistic approach that works to address not only their comprehension, but also their interest.I’m a huge fan of a good book, some good coffee, and traveling.

I am a graduate of Washington State University where I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Foreign Language, specifically focusing on Spanish Language and Cultures. After graduating, I was accepted into Washington State's Masters in Teaching program where I continued my studies focusing to obtain a teaching certification for grades 8-12 Spanish Language Education.Since finishing my collegiate career I have been teaching high school Spanish on Seattle's East side. As a teacher, I have very much enjoyed me experience when it comes to tutoring students, especially students who may be struggling with the confusing grammar concepts of the Spanish Language. That being said, while I have an appreciation and the skills in writing, ESL education, and English grammar, I am most passionate and excel the most at tutoring Spanish (Levels 1-4).When it comes to language teaching, I believe it cannot be rushed. I try to ensure my students understand each component of the language fully until moving onto the next. Language learning builds on itself, and if one gets caught up and confused within the first weeks, there is no doubt trouble will arise down the road. I like to ensure my students feel confident each step of the way in order to see success in the long run.During my free time, I love to travel and have spent time in Spain, Chile, Uruguay, Costa Rica, and Mexico studying the Spanish language and submersing myself in its different cultures. Additionally, I am an avid WSU Cougar fan, love to paint, and enjoy the sun, water, and mountains of Washington any way I can.

AP Studio Art: 2-D Design Tutor • +19 Subjects

I received my Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art and Theatre Arts from the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma, with a focus in digital art and costume design/construction, respectively. I'm an currently pursuing a further degree in Creative Writing with Southern New Hampshire University. I tutored extensively in college, working in my university library as a writing coach; I worked with Mathnasium for a little under a year as an instructor, teaching foundational and complex mathematics to young children; and I currently work with Study Hub teaching students with dyslexia and dysgraphia how to decode the English language using the Wilson system. My primary area of expertise is English Language Arts, including: creative writing; academic writing; and literary history. Stories shape the world, and the world is in turn shaped by stories; every book, play, song, and painting is a snapshot of a moment in history, of what the people of the time believed, and of how they acted out those beliefs. In better understanding our stories, we better understand ourselves, both as a larger human race and as individuals. I firmly believe that every student in the world could benefit enormously from one-on-one tutoring, and the personalized learning plan that accompanies it. Each student has different learning needs, goals, strengths, and struggles that can get lost in a large classroom setting; tutoring gives me the chance to meet every student exactly where they are, and to help them grow not only as students, but as people. When I'm not teaching, I enjoy reading fiction and history, ice skating (very badly), and painting.
