I am a graduate of Dowling College which is located in Oakdale, New York. I received my Bachelor of Arts in English and my Master of Science in Secondary Education. During my time at Dowling, I volunteered as a tutor for academically challenged students. I am also a volunteer for Suffolk Literacy where I work with adults on Long Island who are looking to improve their reading or English speaking skills. In my experience as a tutor, I've always tried to make lessons engaging and fun for my students. Hello! My name is Catherine Raj and I am a second-year medical student at Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. I graduated from The Ohio State University with a Bachelor's of Science in Neuroscience in 2022. Since 2015, I have tutored children from ages 3-16 in areas of math and reading, as well as their school curriculum. Apart from tutoring here, I have worked for the Kumon Learning Center as a teaching instructor for 5 years. While I am certified to tutor a broad range of subjects, I have years of experience with tutoring young children in math and reading, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, phonics, reading comprehension, and much more. My tutoring career began on a mission trip to El Salvador in which I tutored children from different villages in English and Math. Since then I have been a peer tutor for all four years of my high school career, tutoring all subjects. I went on to do a community outreach tutoring program for children in the community of Providence, Rhode Island near my university. As a lifelong theater lover, my primary focus was dramatic literature and theory; my other academic interests include children's books, early American literature, and the history of literary theory from antiquity to the present.I tutor several subjects, including SAT prep, grammar and mechanics, study skills, and public speaking. But as someone who's often found the writing process agonizing, essay writing is the subject closest to my heart. I'm deeply sympathetic to any student who dreads sitting down to write an essay. English tutoring tends to attract people who have always enjoyed writing; they may find themselves stymied when faced with a student who has zero desire to write anything at all. I know firsthand how hard it can be to sit down and get words on the page, and over the years I've amassed an arsenal of ways to trick even the most recalcitrant student into writing a strong essay without having a nervous breakdown.I'm also happy to help students who want to get more organized and sharpen their study skills. At Columbia, I spent several semesters as a note-taker for the Office of Disability Services; i.e., in several separate classes, my notes were selected as exemplary and distributed each week to students whose learning disabilities impaired their ability to take their own notes. I also spent two years working in a lawyer's office, where I became even more rigorously organized, systematic, and detail-oriented than I had been in school. To my mind, the key to organization is to create a system with enough structure that it can be applied to almost any situation. But at the same time, the system exists to serve you; if you spend more time organizing your work rather than actually doing it, you may need to incorporate a little wiggle room.In my spare time, I enjoy reading, theater, yoga, and knitting.

I am also experienced as a tutor or conversation partner for ESL learners and others working on improving their English language skills. I've tutored both small groups and individuals for four years, working with students across a range of ages from elementary through high school. Because of students' differing needs and interests, I always make a point of finding the approach that works with each person. I focus on first understanding why a student is having difficulty, rather than just drilling them. Sometimes this is a matter of the student's learning style, in which case I adapt my teaching style to that and help them develop studying habits suited to their way of learning. Sometimes it's a matter of having trouble with a particular concept, in which case I'll work with the student to rethink and re-articulate the problem in terms that will make more sense to them. In my free time, when I'm not reading or writing, I like to go running, practice the piano, and see my friends.

My passion for teaching reading inspired me to obtain my Masters in Curriculum and Instruction: Reading from Grand Canyon University before achieving a Masters in Educational Leadership from Northern Arizona University in 2015. After all these years, my favorite job has always been to work with K-5 kiddos, particularly with those who struggle in reading. I love helping students find success, make gains and be confident readers. All they need is the toolbox, I can give them the tools!

I am a Colorado State University student in Mechanical Engineering. I work as a Physics and Calculus tutor on Campus both privately and during office hours. I am also an Engineering Mentor for the Incoming students in Engineering each year. I have experience with courses from chemistry to mathematics and physics. I am in Pi Tau Sigma, the mechanical engineering honor society, and genuinely love the subject matter with which I work.I also have a minor in Business Admin as I had originally begun a business degree and then transferred to the college of engineering. Therefore, I am also prepared to tutor in business math (statistics, calculus, finance) as well as management or introductory business coursework.I hope to earn my Master's and PhD in engineering eventually, but I also like hiking, sports, running and just about anything athletic or outdoors. Working on cars and learning new areas of STEM, like 3-D printing, are also hobbies.I take my job seriously; I have seen many students achieve grades they were ecstatic about, but also I have seen rising self-confidence and independent problem solving skills rise.
