I earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Southern Oregon University with a certification in Secondary Education. I continue to take graduate courses in Mathematics with over twenty-seven units of graduate math and math education courses.It was in Environmental Science that the University of North Texas awarded me a Master of Science. This is my avocation, I care about the world and what happens to all things. I am interested in how everything connects.My education has afforded me the opportunity to work both in the United States and internationally.After teaching high school math for two years in Medford, Oregon, I joined the Peace Corps. I was fortunate to accept a placement in Papua New Guinea, where I completed my two-year contract and was head teacher before leaving. Following that experience, I became a math specialist for the non-profit educational organization, Project SEED. At Project SEED I delivered Socratic group discovery lessons and wrote and delivered professional development seminars. In this role, I worked alongside teachers and administrators to ensure that students were engaged and excited about math.When I began graduate school I took a position with Karen Dillard's College Prep. There I wrote curriculum and acted as a director for a tutoring business. Both in that position and my subsequent consulting business, I was able to teach students how to master college entrance exams. I trained new teachers and wrote and updated curriculum. During this time, I also took on adjunct work at the Art Institute of Dallas. There I taught college students remedial math and environmental science.My most recent experience was international. I have taught mathematics in both the UAE and in Sweden. In all the positions, I was able to share my passion for teaching with students, parents, teachers, administrators, and colleagues.I specialize in inquiry-based teaching and have embraced the philosophy of growth mindset as I explore what motivates students to learn.

I am a current junior at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky. Upon my graduation in 2022, I will be dual majoring in Environmental Studies and Asian Studies with a focus in Chinese. I received the Chinese language scholarship, as well. I have tutored students in Chinese ranging from middle school level through college level. While I am able to tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about Chinese, English, and essay editing. My tutoring style is kind and patient, and I do my best to make every lesson engaging and entertaining. I am passionate about helping students, specifically when they are learning a language, because I want students to have the confidence to use a language that could be vastly different from the one's their friends and parents may have studied. This confidence will carry them forward in not only studying said language, but other areas of study, as well. In my spare time, I love to read YA and fantasy books, create wire sculptures, play tennis, and watch movies with my family.

I love many things - reading, tea, drumming, my dogs - but I love teaching best. It has been my most rewarding and enjoyable endeavor. As the oldest of 5, helping with homework was a given. When told as a teenager that I'd make a great teacher, I decided being trapped in a room with more kids was not on my life agenda. I attended UCONN and graduated with a BS in Agriculture (CANR).I've done many jobs in my life (milking cows, counseling the unemployed, supervising summer work crews, guiding trail rides...) and, oddly enough, they all involved teaching in some way. Well, not the cows, but THEY taught ME a lot about patience. When I left dairy work for health reasons, my cousin suggested substitute teaching. Then a little third grade boy in a special needs class (my second assignment) stole my heart and my future was decided. After substituting for 5 years (K -12) I completed teaching certification at ECSU in Willimantic.I have been a certified teacher for over 25 years. My subject areas include Biology, Environmental Science, Human Physiology, Physical and General Sciences, and Ive worked with students at fundamental, college prep and honors levels. For 20 years, I taught in 2 alternative settings: a private, non-profit residential school and a public alternative high school; the last 5 years at a regular high school. My greatest strengths lie in working with children who face challenges to success like learning disabilities and behavioral issues. My favorite subjects are Genetics, and Anatomy and Physiology.
