Mr. D. was able to keep my daughter engaged and interested the entire session. He made her feel confident with reading. She stated that he was the "best teacher in the world". What year in?

I want to thank VT for connecting me with my English tutor. I'm a 49 yr old that enrolled back in college to complete my degree and I was having the most difficult time meeting the demands of my writing assignments. But fortunately, I was matched with an educator that has made what seemed hopeless in my efforts to write academic papers effectively a piece of cake.

Do they have an IEP or 504 plan? (We have tutors that specialize in learning differences)

The tutor that was paired with my daughter was perfect and fits Bella's needs. Bella struggles with attention and has been on a 504 plan for years. The tools used, the interaction and flexibility are priceless. I was hesitant at first but now I'd do it again and I recommend Varsity Tutors!!

Session Summaries by English Tutors

English Tutoring review by Kimberly in Alexandria, VA
We did another chapter of Animal Farm and did more test review. The student seems to be comfortable with the essay portion of the exam, but worried about the multiple choice reading comprehension section. I gave him a step by step guide on how to do these questions and I did see an improvement after that. We are going to spend our next session working on the reading comprehension and listening sections.

English Tutoring review by Benjamin in Alexandria, VA
We began by talking about the essay that the student wrote since the last session. He is getting better at organizing his thoughts, and could easily write a basic three-point/five-paragraph essay for his exams by now. We then read a news article and I had him write down the words he didn't know, and then write me a three paragraph essay summarizing it. (I've assigned four more of these over the next week for him to bring back to me.) We finished by doing a timed practice test and talking about his answers. He blazed through the questions, and it was clear that if he knew the answers, he got them immediately.

We continued to practice vocabulary words, an area in which the student has shown great improvement, and added words for him to study. He also showed improved reading comprehension. I dedicated this session mostly to grammar, and taught him the proper usages of commas. He learned the material well, and I plan to continue punctuation lessons next session.

The student and I worked on brainstorming for a two part essay which was due Friday. We read the questions, talked about the important elements, and he summarized the stories for me. We talked about which stories would best fit the questions, and then we worked on creating cloud charts in order to put his ideas down on paper.

English Tutoring review by Gita in Alexandria, VA
Over the winter holidays, the student me a draft of her notes for the play she was reading. I gave her feedback, and she was able to continue improving her notes. The student clarified some points of her writing and worked on making her theme statements sound less like morals or lessons. After she finished with her notes, we reviewed for her upcoming test on the play. We focused on the purposes of minor characters and on the symbolism of scenes and objects in the play.

English Tutoring review by Lindsay in Alexandria, VA
After speaking with The student's aunt last week I decided to have her write an essay for me to see her level. We first discussed brainstorming and drew out a mind map and outline for the essay. We talked about the different elements of a paragraph, how the paper should be organized chronologically, and the structure of an essay. We worked together on her thesis statement. She had a good grasp of all the necessary components of writing and from her essay I could tell that part of the problem was lack of effort. Her writing was fairly elementary, but did follow the structure we discussed. For homework I asked her to rewrite the essay incorporating the corrections we went over together and adding richness and detail to it.
