Elementary Math Tutoring review by Jennifer in Memphis, TN
The student reviewed colors and shapes today. After reviewing colors, he learned how to spell them correctly. He at first confused triangle and rectangle, but I think he finally knows them perfectly. He also learned new shapes such as octagon and diamond. Now that he knows how to spell his name, I am trying to reinforce the concept by having him write his name on top of every paper we work on. This will get him in the good habit of doing this for school. We also went over addition. He always needs a few problems with assistance before he can complete them on his own. We will continue to work on this. I also gave him time to draw and color. He was giving new spelling words, and as usual, needed to write them three times each and use them in a sentence. I also noticed in the past that he needs help with figuring out what Math word problems are asking him. Because of this, I gave him a lot of word problems to complete. I noticed after a few problems, that he also has difficulty with simple subtraction. I then directed the Math lesson towards simple addition and subtraction problems. After he completed these, I had him go back to the word problems, which he then completed flawlessly. We also reviewed fractions (1/4,1/3,1/2)--he seems to be getting the hang of these!! Lastly, I had him read a passage, wrote about it, and then drew about it. I think this exercise did a great job of covering a lot of skills that he needs to work on!

During this session, I worked with Student L first. We did some more practice with clocks using the think-it-through tiles. We also did some subtraction problems with take away problems. He seemed very confident with the subtraction, but he had some difficulty remembering the clock work we did last week. Student M and I worked on clocks and subtraction as well, and she did well with both concepts. If she had difficulty with a subtraction problem, I asked her to use her fingers or draw a picture to figure it out. She did a good job of staying focused during our session.

I wrapped up work with this student. She read a level H passage with minimal help. We also worked on simple subtraction using chips to aide in the process.

Today the student and I continued practice with counting money. We reviewed counting up coins, finding the fewest coins necessary to make a dollar amount, and making change. She showed that her understanding of these concepts is growing stronger and more fluent. To end the session we played multiplication-fact tic-tac-toe. Her dedication to practicing those facts has really increased her speed and fluency.

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Kathryn in Memphis, TN
We focused on math today and began by playing a spatial recognition and cognitive thinking game of placing different sets of beads into squares. The student had some success with the game and was able to correctly cover 2 of the squares. We moved on to "I Spy" with the intent of making it a math and color game for her to identify objects of certain colors and quantities in the room. Addition problems were also included in the game by having more than 1 object. She suggested another game where we cut out numbers. The student correctly answered my questions on what numbers did the cut-outs make and the solution to the addition problem. She wanted to switch to writing, so we began writing letters down.

I continued to review similar material with the student during this tutoring session. Since he is now in school I wanted to make sure he is as prepared as possible for his school year math class. The concepts are as follows: multiplication, division, decimals, rounding/ estimating, fractions, probability, mean, mode, median, range. He did another fantastic job and we got through a significant amount of material.
