Recent CLEP Social Sciences and History Tutoring Session Notes
We spent most of the time going over the practice test the student did the previous weekend. He had really improved on Logical Reasoning. He did well on math. We went over all the problems and worked a little on math.
We continued to focus on verbal and writing. The student has really embraced the strategies and we are ready to really focus on the test-taking, in general. We are going to focus on the time element in the next coming sessions.
We focused on the math, and the student does well when he chunks the section into 10-minute stretches and uses that as a pacing strategy; for 60 problems in 60 minutes, he should be completing more than 1 problem per minute in order to have time for the more complicated problems later in the section. He did really well demonstrating general mastery of the content. When he focuses, he can do really well. We also completed one of his math packets, which has problems very similar to some of the more difficult assessment test problems.
We completed three passages from a practice for assessment test reading; we also continued to focus on assessment test vocabulary, as well as punctuation (primarily the use of colons and semicolons). In addition, the student completed an assessment English test prior to our session, and we covered the answers.
I gave the student the reading and English portions of an assessment practice test. We had a few minutes left over, so we started going over her answers for the reading section. I also assigned her a test taking strategies reading to complete before our next session.
We went over basic graph and chart trends: direct, inverse, exponential, flat, etc. We then started basic science sections in which she was showed the graphs before the questions. She had to explain to me any patterns and trends she noted in the graphs and tables. She then proceeded to answer the questions. She showed some success at this.
