TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY & PURDUE UNIVERSITY.
I majored in Psychology and English at Blinn College, but did not pursue an A.A. I received a B.A. from Texas A&M University, where I majored in Psychology with a double minor in Sociology and English. I completed my M.S. in Applied Behavior Analysis from Purdue University. I am currently in the Educational Instruction and Technology program at Purdue University, where I am working on a second Master's degree.
At Blinn College, I began working in the English writing lab my freshman year and tutored college students in English, essay writing, and Microsoft Office for two years. For the past 20 years, I have privately tutored high school and college students free of charge. I like helping others succeed, and especially enjoy English, psychology, and essay writing and research projects. Last year, I took a job with Club Z as a tutor for students ages 11-17 in the areas of reading, writing, language arts, and test preparation.
ENGLISH & WRITING SKILLS.
I am comfortable tutoring elementary school through college. I have taught English, including grammar, vocabulary, spelling, reading, writing, and MLA or APA writing style. I have worked with students to learn the steps of the writing process, to organize and structure their writing assignments, and with writing skills such as varying sentence structure and word choice. I have tutored students on the various components of the English and Writing portions and their components for both the STARR assessment and SAT.
PSYCHOLOGY & RESEARCH SKILLS.
I have also tutored many college students in Psychology. I have assisted students with each step of their research projects, like focusing a topic, locating relevant journal articles, assessing the quality of research articles, maintaining organization of sources, synthesis of the research literature, the requirements for each section of a paper written in APA style, tone and professional writing style, citations, etc.. I have been asked for help with other types of assignments as well. Also, APA writing style and general assistance such as comprehension of various topics and studying the material for exams.
I have provided assistance to students as they prepared for various exams. I can help with skill review and development in math, reading, and language arts. I have also provided tutoring to prepare for the essay portions required for some types of academic tests. I have successfully used a variety of resources and materials, but I can incorporate purchased materials as well upon request. I have created individualized lesson plans based on the student's statement of current ability or specific request for assistance. I have also based the lessons upon the results of diagnostic assessment.
Finally, I have been tutoring students in Microsoft Office software. Access is the only program I am unfamiliar with. Younger students have needed help creating PowerPoint presentations. Word is the program I have provided the most help with in order to educate the student about how to use all of the useful features of the program.
LEARNING DISABILITIES AND OTHER CHALLENGES.
I also have experience working with children and adults with different types of learning challenges. Some examples of challenges include learning disabilities, such as dyslexia, as well as other issues that can impact educational performance, such as Dysgraphia, ADD/ADHD, or trouble with study skills, motivation, organization, or project planning. These students receive specialized assistance to overcome their educational challenges using techniques that are research based or personally recommended by others who used the strategy and achieved success. I work with the client to find something that works for them. My goal is to minimize the effect of the student's specific challenges by teaching the student how to cope with and compensate for his disability and/or targeting and minimizing any areas of weakness to achieve success.
The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Discover the possibilities.
