Studying for the ACT can be daunting, and if you're going to be doing so, you may want to look into the excellent online Cincinnati ACT courses provided by Varsity Tutors. As you begin to think about what colleges and universities you want to apply to, you should also be thinking about taking an admissions test. Since Ohio pays for each student to take the ACT near the end of your junior year, taking advantage of this opportunity is a good choice.
Some schools require applicants to submit an ACT or SAT score, but virtually any school will review your score if you take the exam. Admissions boards can use your ACT score to determine how ready you are for the rigors of college-level study. The more selective the school, the more important an excellent score can be. After all, they want to accept students they believe will do well and continue on through graduation.
The stakes are high. That's why Varsity Tutors offers high-quality Cincinnati ACT courses taught by expert instructors who have demonstrated their knowledge and their communication skills. We aim to set you up in a class that can help improve your test prep skills and provide specific tips and suggestions that fit your particular needs.
What subjects will I study during a Cincinnati ACT class?
Probably the first thing your instructor can do is introduce you to the structure of the ACT, which includes four required sections and an optional writing task. Again, it's important that you know what's expected by the types of schools you're going to apply to because acceptance into some majors does actually require you to have completed the Writing section. The required sections are all presented as multiple-choice questions, and the full test without the Writing section takes about 3 hours. The Writing section adds another 40 minutes to the total.
The required sections are Science, Math, Reading, and English. A large part of your Cincinnati ACT class time will be spent reviewing these subjects in depth, so we'll just take a brief look at each section here.
The Science section has a time limit of 35 minutes for you to answer 40 questions that assess your skills in interpretation, analysis and evaluation, reasoning, and problem-solving. The areas of science covered are those you've likely covered in high school: biology, earth and space sciences, chemistry, and physics. Working with scientific data while using the scientific method are important concepts to be familiar with if you want to do well on this section.
You have one hour to answer 60 questions in the Math section. Again, math you've studied during high school is tested, specific pre-algebra through intermediate algebra, coordinate and plane geometry, and trigonometry. Having a solid understanding of numerical reasoning, number systems, solving problems using graphing, and working with functions, will help you if you wish to earn a high score on the Math section. You should also be familiar with the calculations necessary to measure geometric shapes, and with data collection, analysis, and application.
Your ACT class instructor can cover all these topics, and if for any reason you feel like you're falling behind the class, in math or any other subject, you can request one-on-one time with your instructor to get up to speed. Varsity Tutors does everything possible to help you reach your full potential on test day.
The Reading and English sections are somewhat related, though they approach your English language skills in different ways. The Reading section has 40 questions you must answer in 35 minutes. You're provided a few reading passages, and each one is followed by a handful of questions meant to detect your proficiency with discerning the central themes and ideas in the piece, concisely summarizing these, and understanding the various connections that can be made between the passages.
The English section has 75 questions and allows you 45 minutes to answer them. These questions are also passage-based, but they test more basic language usage skills and conventions. Your understanding of how topics develop in an organized way and whether a written piece has unity and cohesion are tested in this section. You also have the opportunity to prove your ability to use proper grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure, as well as recognize the style and tone used in a passage.
How does a Cincinnati ACT course help me prepare for the test?
The ACT courses provided by Varsity Tutors meet in a virtual classroom that you can sign into from anywhere, whether that's at home, in an empty classroom at Walnut Hills High School, or on a nice day, on a bench outside Elder High School. Classes are offered in either 2- or 4-week sections, and new classes begin every week. There are multiple courses going on at different times of the day, so you can find one that fits into your busy schedule.
You can feel confident that your Cincinnati ACT class instructor is qualified to provide top-notch instruction because Varsity Tutors vets each instructor for the necessary knowledge and communication skills. You can communicate with your instructor and virtual classmates during class. Getting the knowledge from your experienced instructor as well as ideas from peers in your same situation can combine for a thorough test-preparation experience.
In addition to reviewing content, your instructor can spend time talking about test-taking strategies that can be crucial as you take the test. Time management is important because of each section's ticking clock, as is learning to understand the sometimes confusingly worded questions are worded on the ACT. With a combination of thorough content review and the introduction of tactics to use during the test geared towards your abilities, you can depend on your Varsity Tutors ACT preparation course to benefit you as you work towards your goals.
