Buckeye, AZ English tutoring
In this session, we focused on using text evidence to support his answer. By going back into the text, he would be able to provide a better, more thorough answer than just using memory. Also, for our fiction reading, we examined characters words, thoughts and actions and how that developed the character. Finally, in the informational text, I pushed him to define higher level vocab words that would need to be figured out using context of the words around it. He did decently well with this but would occasionally struggle defining a word he had never heard before.

I worked as a teacher's assistant in the class, circulating throughout the class, marking up the papers and answering questions the children had as we worked through the reading comprehension multiple choice practice. I focused particularly on around 5 kids who I knew from the individual tutoring were having difficulty.

This was my first session with both students. First, I met the parents and discussed with them the issues that the children are experiencing. I was informed that Student A is struggling with learning to read, and Student B is struggling with reading comprehension. Then, I worked with each student for an hour. The parents informed me that they usually utilize the Bob books to help Student A learn to read. Therefore, during my first session with her , I used the Bob books to assess her issues with learning to read. One of the issues I noticed is that she tends to look at the pictures in the book instead of reading the actual words. Because of this, she "reads" words that are not actually on the page, and she "reads" words that the picture depicts instead of the what the words actually are. At the end of the session, I informed her father that this is the case. He informed me that her teacher "teaches" her to read by telling her to look at the picture. This is certainly an issue. During my session with Student B, I watched him work with a homework assignment to determine his level of reading comprehension. What I noticed is that the issue is not that he does not understand the reading, he sometimes does not understand the questions asked which are designed to assess his understanding of the reading. Therefore, I worked with him on this issue. Overall, though, the initial sessions were good.

The student's reading fluency is gradually improving more and more each session. I timed him 7 times today, and his highest wpm was 99 & his lowest was 68. We discussed the importance of consistency when reading. We also discussed the importance of setting and achieving goals; goals are easier to achieve when you have a explicit goal envisioned. I had him write down his goal for the summer, which was to consistently read 110 words per minute. With more practice, I believe he will achieve his goal and show more consistency in his reading.

In this session, the student practiced reading her current sight word list. She also completed a word blend worksheet for the sound dr (drink, drip, drop ). We also did a lot of practice with short a versus long a sounds in words. I used a spelling activity to help her distinguish the short and long a sound. She was able to spell ( bake, take, make, cake) long a words and ( cap, hat, cat, map) short a words. I will continue to work with her on listening for these specific sounds. In our next session we will continue to review sight words and work on reading a short story.
