If you're looking for some help as you prepare for the GRE, Varsity Tutors can connect you with resources for Austin GRE prep. Whether you're a current undergraduate student or a working professional who has chosen to return to school to open up new career prospects, the Graduate Record Examinations is one potential test that you may have to take. We can help you determine whether an Austin GRE prep class is the right format for you, or whether you'd be better served by working with an Austin GRE tutor.
For many students, the GRE may be a required part of the graduate school application process, whether they are applying to the graduate school at the University of Texas at Austin or the graduate school at St. Edward's University. It's important to do as well as you can on this test because many admissions boards will use your score as a factor in whether they believe you can handle the work required at the graduate school level. The test is nearly four hours long and has three main sections: Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing. There may also be two unscored sections. For those whose path to graduate school has just started, there may be benefits to getting help with Austin GRE prep. Varsity Tutors can connect you with an Austin GRE tutor or enroll you in an Austin GRE prep course that fits into your schedule.
What does Austin GRE prep include?
Austin GRE prep can focus on all three of the main sections in this computer-based exam. It can also include time management strategies or tips for managing test-related anxiety. There are three scored sections and two that are unscored. You'll be tested on concepts in Analytical Writing, Verbal Reasoning, and Quantitative Reasoning. The two unscored sections are the Experimental section and a Research section.
You'll have 3.75 hours to complete the entire exam, and sometimes it helps to know what you may encounter when you take your test. Working with an Austin GRE tutor can give you helpful insights into the layout of the exam as well as the types of questions you'll be asked to answer. We're going to start with the Verbal Reasoning section.
The Verbal Reasoning section is comprised of two subsections with 20 questions each. Questions in this section focus on reading comprehension, text completion, and sentence equivalence. You'll be asked to read a passage and answer related questions to show how well you understand. There are often 10 passages on each test and up to six questions per passage. In terms of sentence equivalence, you'll be given a sentence with only partial information, and you'll be expected to choose the answer that completes the sentence. You'll be asked to choose two answers from six possible choices. To examine your abilities in text completion, you'll be asked to choose the best answers that complete short passages. You may have up to five options to choose from.
The Quantitative Reasoning section is split into two subsections, with 20 questions each. Basic math skills and your understanding of topics like data analysis, arithmetic, geometry, and algebra are the focus of this section. Multiple choice questions, numeric entry, and quantitative comparison are the three types of questions you'll encounter.
In the Analytical Writing section, you'll be asked to analyze an issue as well as a separate task. You'll have half an hour to complete each task. Admissions boards will look at this section's scores to judge how well you can express complicated topics using examples and reasons to support your ideas. It also assesses your skill in examining the evidence given with claims, and how well you can keep a discussion on topic.
While they're not scored, the Research and Experimental sections offer an opportunity to exam designers to test new questions. The Experimental section may not be included in the exam, but if it is, it won't be identified. It will be within the Quantitative or Verbal Reasoning sections. If the Research section is part of your test, it will be labeled, and may be used in place of the embedded Experimental section. The Research section is optional.
How can Austin GRE prep help me?
If you're looking to get a head start on your Austin GRE prep, there are two options available to you: one-on-one sessions with an instructor who concentrates on helping you to strengthen your understanding of the GRE, or a GRE prep class you'll attend with other students who are seeking the same kind of support. It's not uncommon for students to use both models of academic coaching services for an important test like the GRE.
If you thrive in an environment where you can interact with others, an Austin GRE prep class is a great option. You'll work online in real time with other students. In your virtual classroom, you'll have the opportunity to take part in discussions and group activities. You can attend class from wherever you are - all you need is an internet connection. There's quite a bit of scheduling flexibility in this model as well. You can choose whether your classes last two weeks or four, and new sessions begin weekly.
If private sessions are more your speed, we can introduce you to an Austin GRE prep tutor who will meet with you whenever and wherever you're comfortable, in person or virtually via the Live Learning Platform. A private instructor can create a schedule of meetings that works for both of you, and a customized plan of instruction that takes your academic strengths and areas of opportunity into account. The plan that your academic coach creates could help you to strengthen your understanding of challenging topics in an effective, efficient manner.

I graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in NYC in 2008, the oldest English speaking acting conservatory in the world. I graduated Summa from University of St Thomas with a BA in English, and just wrapped up a MS in Data Science from Northwestern. I'm a huge Red Sox fan and love watching detective shows when I have free time.... Positivity. Always. I believe that if a student is given positive tools and is allowed to understand the material rather than be lectured at, they're more likely to do well in the future.

...advice, "Don't make that mistake!". The teacher tries to hear what the student wants and then figures what to work on in order to get there. I've been both a student and teacher of guitar, and I try to take that teaching style into my tutoring. I never start by explaining material or by "simplifying" it (because that usually means repeating it again and again!) but by listening to the student and finding out exactly...

I'm an experienced teacher and tutor with a Bachelors in English from the University of Alabama and a Masters in Literature and the Humanities from St. Edward's University, looking to help my students share in my love of learning!... The answer is out there. I really do think that, no matter what the problem is, a solution can be found if we all work hard enough!... Discuss what subjects or concepts the student is struggling with, and what study methods just haven't worked for them in the past. That way, we can tackle the problem from a new angle and with a fresh approach!

When I tutor, I hope to impart more than knowledge. I strive to teach new and efficient ways of thinking, as time is an invaluable part of our lives, be it personal or work related. Over the course of over 9 years, I have tutored children and adults, learning how to adapt to each learning style. As long as the student who comes for help is dedicated, I believe I can transform dedication into success.

I have a passion for learning and for helping others to learn! Started teaching undergrad courses in 1991...began tutoring in 1999 and received a tutoring award from the University of Pennsylvania. I like to make hard subjects clear and easy to handle!... Usually it's part "get to know you." But then I ask them what is bothering them the most, and we start there. If we have to back up to review things, no problem; I am there to help. I try to remind students I am not their teacher or parent, and I am not judging them at all.
