Growing up as a first generation student in Boston Public Schools has given me the experience needed to understand the challenges students face: access to content. Through my continued studies at Hamilton College (Bachelor's in Mathematics) and UMASS Boston (Masters in Education) I was able to learn that mastery of the content is not just what is needed to ensure student success. At the minimum, a teacher must also utilize and create anti-racist curriculum, prioritize the social and emotional well-being of the student, communicate and engage with a student's family active participants in their learning, familiarize themselves with current cultural and social events in the real-world, and provide differentiation for students by utilizing tools, manipulatives and providing students with multiple forms of expressing what they have learned. I am hoping to continue to learn about the needs of students through ESL Certification in the fall.I have experience working in two Elementary Boston Public Schools as both support staff and a teacher in an inclusion classroom. I find great joy in sharing my cultural background and helping students learn more about themselves through the content they need to learn. Although my primary experience is with Elementary students, I love exploring and teaching Math topics such as Pre-Algebra. Mathematics is typically a polarizing subject and being able to show students that everyone is a mathematician has been a big passion of mine.My belief that everyone deserves compassion, dignity and respect is at the forefront of my philosophy of education. Students deserve a safe and supportive learning environment modeled and led by an empathetic teacher. A student's interests and hobbies as well as the world around us are used with the content to help increase engagement. I hold a PhD in European History from the University of Chicago. I have taught at the university level and in continuing education settings since I received my degree in 1995. Students in my courses learn how to engage with material, how to analyze large bodies of information and draw conclusions, how to think critically about information and ideas, and how to organize and prioritized information. I also emphasize writing skills for students. Every class I have ever taught has completed a writing assignment. As a talented writer myself, I have the skills to work with students to improve their writing abilities. I work with them on style and content. I am very familiar with MLA and Chicago styles. I teach my students how to formulate a thesis, or an argument; how to use evidence to test that argument; how to perform analysis on that evidence; how to draw conclusions from that analysis; and how to present it all in an interesting and engaging manner. Students in my classes experience success in other classes and in their education. A significant number have gone on to pursue graduate study, including at Ivy League schools, while others have pursued successful career paths in various professions. I am a gifted teacher who is able to connect with students and assist them in their studies.

I am a Master's level graduate in the biological sciences with an infectious enthusiasm for math, physics, biology, and chemistry. While I was in graduate school, I taught laboratory courses and tutored students outside of class. I've kept numerous emails from students who thanked me for giving them novel ways to study, one even raising her grade from a D to an A- over the course of the semester!I love to brainstorm ways to make information accessible to every uniquely wired mind and learning style. I focus heavily on checking students' understanding of basic concepts before trying to explore the more technical details. Often it is a misunderstanding of an "old" concept from many years back that is preventing full understanding of the current topic. As a scientist with keen observation and troubleshooting skills, I will look for specific roadblocks that are preventing your child from achieving excellence in the problem subject.My undergraduate degree was in philosophy, which was writing-intensive and highly analytical. My students are some of the brightest and hardest working kids I know and I truly enjoy going into work each day.I grew up in Rochester, New York. I tutor all english related subjects as well as algebra 1. I have previous experience working at Khan's Tutorial as well as Child Center of NY.

I'm a sophomore at Cornell University expecting to major in Government with minors in English, Inequality Studies, and Policy Analysis and Management. I'm interested in education policy and am excited to work as a tutor to help other students in the subjects I know well and to learn more about how private educational organizations can influence learning. I tutor in a wide variety of subjects, but I find SAT prep incredibly rewarding and love to help with English writing or reading.

We are all born with a natural curiosity, and my goal as a tutor is to engage students so that they are motivated by that curiosity. I want students to learn through their own individual styles, and my approach to english, writing, and literature is to encourage questions and critical thought.
