In this session with the student, we continued our English and Math introduction and review. For homework, he had written an essay on whether schools should require uniforms for students. He took a pro-uniform side. I read and critiqued the essay, noting that he needed to list examples in his introduction and needed to flesh out his body paragraphs to make them more specific. However, his structure, thesis, and arguments were all solid. He is well on his way to a good essay score. We covered several topics in English in an assessment prep book, including subject/verb agreement, prepositional phrases, contrast/transition words, and conciseness. In Math, we finished our discussion of plugging in on questions with variables, and also covered backwards solving (plugging in answer choices). For homework, he will do most of a Math section from the assessment prep book and will try to utilize the techniques we've learned on the word problems and on problems with multiple variables.

We spent time working through four reading passages. For the first two passages, the student and I worked paragraph by paragraph to identify the main idea and purpose (relative to the passage) of each paragraph. She was able to answer most of the questions correctly. For the third passage, she read and annotated every paragraph of the passage. We then discussed the passage to check her comprehension before she answered the questions. For the last step, she annotated a passage under a four-minute time constraint with short notes, underlines, and circles. Overall, she seems to be more comfortable with the social science, humanities, and natural science passages. We also worked on science. First I talked to her about how to approach each passage. We talked about skimming graphs/tables, circling equations, and checking column titles or graph axes. We also talked about the types of questions. She then worked through two passages and did relatively well with the questions. She has two reading passages and assorted other passages to complete during the next two weeks.

In this session, the student and I began by talking about her experience preparing for the ACT so far and how she had done on the math and writing diagnostic tests that she had taken. Since the student said that in school, writing was the subject that she was least comfortable with, we first worked together on one passage from the ACT's English section. I explained how I would go about reading the passage, and then student and I then worked together on the questions one-by-one. We talked about how looking at a question's possible answer choices sometimes gave a clue about the topic of a question, and about avoiding redundancy, using correct punctuation, and identifying subjects, verbs, and other parts of sentences. She had some trouble with questions involving grammar and idiomatic expression, but, as we practiced, she improved in answering grammar-based questions by thinking about when to use certain types of punctuation, avoiding too-wordy answers, and choosing logical sentence structures. In the second part of the session, the student and I worked on about 30 problems from the ACT's math section. We first began by working on the initial problems of the math section. The student did well on these, with no major problems, so we moved ahead to more challenging problems in the middle of the math section. Overall, the student did a good job setting up, solving, and manipulating algebraic equations and expressions. However, she had slightly more trouble with geometry and with other concepts that she may have learned earlier and not practiced for a while, like the Pythagorean theorem, angle relationships, and fractions. For the problems that she was unsure about, the student understood why a certain strategy worked once we had talked about it. For more practice, she can continue to work on problems from the math section to refresh herself about math concepts that she may not have used in her classes recently.

Today, the student and I discussed the ACT science section for the first time. I began by giving him an overview of the section and discussing strategy. The student then took one practice section. We went through some of the more difficult questions together. The student is very strong at interpreting graphs. We will discuss the reading section next week.
