Hi everyone! I'm Lia and I'm so excited to be part of our community here at Varsity Tutors. I am currently a 6th grade Math and Science teacher at the School District of Philadelphia, and I graduated from Penn State in 2016. I am currently working towards my Masters in Education at the University of Pennsylvania and I'm happy to have the opportunity to help students with some 1:1 tutoring time because I know how far a child can go with some individualized attention and some really specialized instruction.

I currently teach Math and Science and I know that some kids can feel like they "just don't get" math and I want to help them turn this thinking around and become confident mathematicians! I know with tutoring, practice and patience children will develop their confidence and make quick progress towards success. I also have tutoring and volunteering experience teaching children from the ages 4-10 elementary Math, where instruction was more on an individual basis. I will be happy to connect curriculum goals of a particular school to what we can do during tutoring sessions too, as I know how important it is to follow the pace of the school year.

I love reading, writing and the social sciences -- I majored in International Politics and my biggest passion is life is curling up with a good book! I have experience teaching adult learners English as a Second Language and also classes specifically on writing and writing techniques. I speak Portuguese fluently and Spanish proficiently so I can help with some trickier homework!
