Session Summaries by Algebra Tutors

Algebra Tutoring review by Stephanie in The University of Utah, UT
The student completed his fourteenth tutoring session aimed at improving his algebra skills. During the session, the tutor continued assisting him with the algebra homework they had begun the previous evening. Specifically, the assignment consisted of a review over writing equations using the formula y = m(x ? h) + k. He was required to write the equation for a line when given a depiction of the line on an xy-graph, coordinates in an xy-chart, or two points on that line. He was initially asked to solve each problem independently. If he solved an item incorrectly, he was asked to work out the problem on the whiteboard so that the tutor could point out his errors and guide him toward the correct solution. After finishing the homework assignment, he and the tutor transitioned to working on optional algebra worksheets his school had provided. He displayed a positive attitude toward learning and adequate levels of focus and motivation throughout the session.

Algebra Tutoring review by Ashley in The University of Utah, UT
The student did not have any homework this evening. He is still working on composite functions so we did more practice with that to prepare him for his upcoming test, which he believes is this Friday, but wasn't sure. He did a great job with everything that I was giving him, only needing a bit of guidance for the higher difficulty problems, but picked up on it quickly. We spent the remainder of our time reviewing the rules for exponents and simplifying expressions with exponents and then went through lots of problems applying the various rules. He struggled quite a bit at first but ended up doing a great job!

Algebra Tutoring review by Michael in The University of Utah, UT
The student did not have any homework, so I made two goals for this session. The first was to help him become more comfortable with solving the geometric problems that he has been working on during the past couple weeks in order to increase his confidence when testing begins. The second goal was to continue introducing trigonometry to prepare him in advance for the more difficult concepts he will learn about later in the school year.

Algebra Tutoring review by Myles in The University of Utah, UT
The student did not seem like he struggled with anything, he just he needed help with homework, and hopefully he has an easier time in class and on exams. I hope the student can better understand what he was doing in today's session and would love for him to be my student.

Algebra Tutoring review by Phoebe in The University of Utah, UT
The student did well on her geometry test (yay!!!). She's starting to work on columnar proofs, which require a lot of theorem and postulate memorization. I told her mom that she needs to get a copy of the theorems and postulates from the teacher as soon as possible. For now, it's basic math properties - reflexive, commutative, transitive, etc. For algebra, we finished Module 5.

Algebra Tutoring review by Samantha in The University of Utah, UT
The student did well today. We reviewed everything from unit 1 again with solving for x, manipulating equations, and using rate*time=distance. We did a lot of problems today to really nail the ideas in. She was able to bounce between different types of problems, which let me know that she really knew what was going on.
