Session Summaries by Elementary Math Tutors

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Alina in The University of Utah, UT
The concepts covered in this tutoring session include multiples, multiplication tables, reading, and elementary science. The student was eager to learn and quickly picked up on all math/multiple concepts, and she read with good fluency and few phonetic errors. She was left with a study guide/questionnaire based on her science notes - so that she could study and cover all topics for her test tomorrow.

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Jennifer in The University of Utah, UT
The first student and I worked more with shapes, fractions, addition facts, subtraction facts, and a little bit of money and coins. She's doing a lot better with the coins, and all that practice really helped! For reading, we read one of her books and took turns reading out loud. The second student and I went back to work with some big numbers. He spelled out some big numbers for more practice writing, spelling and with math. We continued with practicing multiplication. I mixed up some practice problems so that he had to pay attention to whether it was addition, subtraction, or multiplication. As for reading, we read his book about the Vikings, which really piqued his interest. He had some practice with big words and new vocabulary. He has made a lot of progress with reading and math!

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Aaron in The University of Utah, UT
The first student and I worked on various math concepts including rounding and time word problems. She finished "James and the Giant Peach," so I assigned a book report and we started reading "Mr. Popper's Penguins." The second student and I kept reading "Witches." We also worked on writing briefly. We then worked on various math topics, including writing visual fractions as fractions, the relationship between addition and multiplication, and finding the perimeter of different shapes.

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Linda in The University of Utah, UT
The first student learned new 6th grade concepts, expanded notation, place value, scientific notation, and writing standard numbers up to 9 digits with and without decimals. She did very well. We also reviewed multiplication and division by playing Math Jeopardy and Slide Math. The second student and I worked on essay writing. He was extremely resistant to writing. I gave him about 20 prompts and he even had difficulty choosing a topic. After my modeling, he finally wrote 3 paragraphs about his upcoming trip to Cancun. I encouraged him to keep a journal while on vacation so he can refer to it to write a story when he returns.

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Rebecca in The University of Utah, UT
The first student showed further understanding of missing sides equations. They are challenging, and she is staying positive and continuing to improve. We will review next week and start on place value. The second student is starting her science essay to learn about the process of light. She set up her outline with ease and is working on research. We will work to organize her information next week.
