At heart, I have unshakable faith in each student's capacity to successfully navigate all subjects. All it takes is figuring out where our individual potholes are, and filling them in! No more flat tires on the same old bad habits or missing information.
For me, the best part of tutoring is watching a student realize he or she is not limited to the difficulties of a subject or skill. I love the moment when a student says "I guess I could be a math person!" Or, "I dropped the word 'loquacious' in conversation, you should have seen their faces!"
Too often, we define our capabilities in such harsh and rigid ways. If we don't understand math as quickly as our peers, we aren't good at math. If diagramming parts of speech doesn't make sense the first time, that must be the only way to learn it, and we're out of luck. If we get so nervous for tests that our minds go blank, we resign ourselves to grades that reflect nerves instead of knowledge.
No! Albert Einstein didn't begin speaking till he was four years old - what if he believed that defined his future?
With a creative approach, individually adapted explanations and examples, and cheerful tenacity, I work diligently with each student to overcome learning gaps, build confidence, and reach academic goals of all varieties.
