Test Prep Tutoring review by Ryan in Salt Lake City, UT
Today the student and I reviewed and studied new SAT vocabulary, and then we spent some time practicing SAT critical reading. We also worked our way through some particularly challenging math problems. The student is gaining confidence each week, and rightfully so. Her scores are improving, and she will be very well prepared on test day.

The student and I worked on the Reading and Writing sections. She is making excellent progress on her reading and writing strategies, but the main thing she will need to work on is her vocabulary, which will allow her to do much better on the sentence completion portion of the test.

The student and I continued our work on the math section today of the college entrance exam. We worked on the fifth section of practice test nine. I'd say that about 50 percent of the material he knows and the other 50 percent are concepts we need to further review, such as functions and combinations. We spent a bit of time talking today about how to approach these lessons, and he is learning them, but I think functions will require another series of instructions to really sink in for him. As such, I am assigning him a series of problems dealing with functions to assess his current knowledge of the material, which I will then use to figure out where to focus our lesson next week.

Test Prep Tutoring review by Noah in Salt Lake City, UT
Today we worked on essays only, both college entrance exam and the advanced placement test. I started by reviewing, analyzing, and giving feedback on the college entrance exam essay. It was stronger, and most importantly shorter than his last. He included some analysis of why his examples supported his position, and generally appropriate examples. I instructed him to write notes as he planned as he was only planning in his head. This will 1) tighten up his argument conceptually because he will know what his position is in a defined referable way and 2) help him write less so he can get all his ideas in in time by focusing the words he does use. We went on to look at several advanced placement essays. He will benefit from planning his writing in any context, clearly defining his claim, and using greater detail.

Test Prep Tutoring review by Maya in Salt Lake City, UT
The student is doing great! We went over the sections she took last week. She had only missed a few questions which was really exciting! We then went over the more difficult questions on another practice test, doing more annotating on long passages. Her work is paying off.

Test Prep Tutoring review by Megan in Salt Lake City, UT
The student had completed another section of a new practice test this week. We reviewed the essay he wrote, paying close attention to both grammar and the relevance of his examples to the question being asked. After this, we reviewed the critical reading section of the test. He struggles with vocabulary and often doesn't know what all of the words in a question mean. He has really mastered the short passage questions, and so we spent the majority of our time practicing finding the main point of long passages and working backwards to predict answers. I asked him what topics he would like us to focus on in our last three sessions, and he told me that math problems and long passage questions are the areas where he would like the most support.
