Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Rebecca in Oakland, CA
Tonight I was able to see the student's final copy of her application essay, and it looks beautiful! She was also excited to show me her final copy of her report on Brazil. Both show her hard work and dedication as a student. After looking those things over, we worked on social studies and some spelling. We also looked over her corrections on her most recent math test. I made a quick math quiz to see if she could answer the questions correctly this time around, and she did great. Another successful night! We will be meeting once more before the school break.

We worked on proper nouns and went over instances where totals and locations would or wouldn't be capitalized. For math, we double checked her homework and worked out several word problems that required a 7th grade level of thinking. We're starting to get into statistics concepts; she's starting the think about surveys and how they can represent larger populations.

The student and I spent most of our time working on social studies reading and studying for an upcoming test in that subject. I also helped him with some research for a Chinese homework assignment dealing with geography. He has finished his science presentation and has made progress on his science paper, which I will help him polish at our next meeting.

The student said he had no homework except for his memoir which he needed to edit and type the final draft. I suggested typing it and letting him read it to me which is what we ended up doing. We spell checked it and corrected a few sentences, and then we went back through it to add descriptions and analogies, adjectives, etc.

Today we covered Science, Social Studies, and Math. For math, we reviewed the student's math lesson about estimating fractions. He was having some difficulty with estimating and the use of pictures and line graphs helped him. We will continue working on that and studying for his upcoming math test. We also worked on his Social Studies study guide. The biggest thing I wanted him to do was to use the text (history book) to find the answer. With some careful skimming, he was able to find the answer. We will continue to study for his tests tomorrow.

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Tania in Oakland, CA
The student wrote a descriptive paragraph of a story of her choice. She decided to tell of her Christmas day. First, we fixed any grammatical and spelling mistakes. Then, we went sentence by sentence to remove any repetition or ineloquent ways of saying things. Then, we went even further-- what tone do you want to convey? How can you make your writing more enticing? How can it not be just, event by event, but subtly show its meaning without explicitly stating it?
