I am now on the other side of things, with a great realization of just how much is being asked of students. With high-stakes testing, high standards of expectations, and sometimes large class sizes, it's no wonder some students find themselves missing bits and pieces of information that they need to do their best.

I am taking some time off to work, but I plan to return to school in the next few years to obtain a graduate degree in Clinical Psychology. While in college, I volunteered with the West Philadelphia Tutoring Project, an organization that brings Penn students into Philly's inner city to tutor low-income middle school students. I found the experience deeply rewarding and my time with WPTP nurtured an interest in working with children professionally. I tutor a wide variety of subjects including English, writing, history, SAT Reading/Writing, French and more! My favorite subject to teach is history. The subject is often viewed by students as boring and unnecessary (along the lines of, "why should I learn something that happened already?"); in my view, history is alive and full of useful lessons that can be applied at the personal, national and societal levels, and I enjoy teaching this point of view to students, helping them to see history as a living, deeply relevant subject matter.

I am working as a Special Education Social Worker in Minneapolis. My experience includes a wide range of subjects and abilities but some of my strongest subjects are reading, writing social studies, and study skills. I think learning should be a fun and encouraging experience and look forward to making learning fun for my clients.

I am able to determine what obstacles are preventing a student from grasping a concept, and create different means of overcoming those obstacles. Creating a partnership with the student and understanding what he or she needs to overcome is what makes me a great tutor.

My favorite part of teaching is getting to know students and creating course materials that engage students to make learning fun and accessible. I mainly tutor math and Chinese.
