I believe the fundamental goal of teaching is to foster learning. Learning takes place in many different contexts. Although everyone is capable of learning, a student's desire to learn is a vital pre-condition to effectively master new concepts and skills. I feel I can influence a student's desire to absorb information by understanding their learning style. People have multiple learning styles: some learn best in lecture atmospheres, some are more engaged by discussion, and others absorb knowledge best when they read and reflect on what they have read. The classroom setting can encourage or inhibit learning depending on the dominant learning style of each student. Accommodating different learning styles creates an atmosphere that is conducive to learning. In addition to addressing different learning styles, flexibility is also a critical component to teaching. As an instructor, it is my job to ensure that learning is taking place all the time which is accomplished by breaking down barriers and observing my student's behaviors. While being prepared for class is critical, it is important to be able to deviate from the plan in order to ensure learning is taking place. No two students or classes are the same and what worked for one class may not be as effective for another class. Even from one class session to another, their mood can change. Students have a lot of on their plate, and sometimes they will come to class energized while other days they may be disengaged. I feel it is my job to identify these moments and adapt the lessons to re-engage them, maximizing our learning opportunities.I see my job as a facilitator because I am creating an atmosphere of learning by guiding students and encouraging their participation through both in-class discussions and online discussion boards. I encourage learning by creating a relaxed environment for students, stimulating conversation about concepts being presented, and organizing material in a way that makes it easiest to understand. I treat subject matter as interconnected, emphasizing that everything students are learning fits together into a holistic understanding of the world, from which they develop their own personal worldview. This approach is accomplished by bringing in real world projects to my classes. When students work on a project that connects to the course material but also has real-life practicality, they put greater effort into their final product. They appreciate the chance to work on something that will be used by an organization (e.g., Submitting real grant applications) rather than just filed away or discarded. One of the most important concepts I hope to impart to students is that learning is a process that never ends. For me, the learning process includes improving myself professionally. I want to read more about formal learning theories to expand my understanding of how learning takes place. As I continue to instruct classes, I also aim to enhance my comfort and confidence in front of classrooms and audiences. Finally, I plan to experiment with different methods and means of presenting information to classes in order to improve the learning atmosphere I create for my students. I continue to grow my professional network and share best practices with colleagues whenever possible in an order to keep my material relevant and adapt with the times."Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire."- W.B. Yeats

Anatomy Tutor • +42 Subjects

I graduated Cum Laude from the University at Buffalo with a BS in Neuroscience and a BA in Psychology. I earned Dean's list during my last two semesters of undergraduate education, which were my heaviest course loads. I am currently a TA for Forensic Osteology and Comparative Primate Anatomy (which I've helped teach for two years) at UB, and I have done private tutoring for Physiology courses. Most importantly, I enjoy helping people figure out strategies that work for them, and want others to love learning as much as I do.I scored in the 85th percentile on the MCAT, and my strong suits are Biology and Psychology/Sociology. I have written for The Spectrum (the student newspaper at UB) and took English literature courses there; I enjoy writing and can help with English or writing subjects as well. I earned my degrees in Neurobiology and Psychology and would love to help you learn both. Some of my favorite classes were Microbiology, Clinical Neurobiology, and Comparative Primate Anatomy. I am currently doing research in Immunological Oncology at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, work as a pharmacy technician, and work in the emergency department at a Level 1 trauma center as an emergency technician and research assistant (which I have been doing for nearly four years).I understand how it feels to be working hard and not seeing results when you take a test or hand in a lab report. My academic success came only after having struggled to figure out the study habits and techniques that work best for me. I encourage students to work hard, but to be relaxed about their learning so that they can walk away actually knowing and understanding valuable information, rather than just memorizing a bunch of facts. I have a flexible schedule and would love to help you learn some cool science.

ACT Writing Tutor • +49 Subjects

If asked, I would define myself as a lifelong student. I feel that in order to truly feel happy and satisfied that one must always pursue further opportunities for learning, growth and personal development. These personal pursuits do not need to be limited purely to the more traditional, academic realm (i.e. college courses and more formal degree programs). With the vast array of resources now available online - including free courses from top Universities and more independent course platforms like Udemy and Coursera through which you can actually build your own course and further your own education in the process - there isn't a single excuse for growing stale and stagnant (in terms of personal education).I feel that one of the best sensations in life is the spark of creativity and intrigue that accompanies a "deep dive" into a new subject. I consistently strive to cultivate further learning and growth by consuming course content, ebooks, audiobooks, podcasts and more! If I feel that my knowledge of a particular topic is lacking, I will take it upon myself to deeply dive into that subject matter so I am able to provide the most accurate and up-to-date instruction possible when tutoring. I believe that it is this type of passion and persistence that lies at the heart of any great instructor and that is even more important than "innate intelligence".One of the greatest barriers that can stand in the way of further learning and growth is a lack of clarity, support and guidance. We know where we are currently, have a clear end goal in mind, and we are willing to work diligently to reach that end goal. The problem is that we have absolutely no idea how to go about mapping out the steps and sub-steps required to move from start to finish. This confusion often gives way to self-doubt, a lack of confidence in our ability, and ultimately abandonment of those educational pursuits. I believe that this is where a tutor can fill a fundamental role. A tutor can help his/her students greatly by providing structure and guidance, along with consistent reinforcement, to guard against the onset of self-doubt.Additionally a skilled tutor will excel in the following:*Determine the best way to structure content so that it will appeal to a visual, auditory or kinesthetic learner.*Clearly map out the path from start to finish along with subgoals that are accomplished along that journey.*Provide reinforcement when goals are achieved and work collaboratively with the student to troubleshoot any new challenges that emerge along the way.I look forward to furthering my own learning as I strive to provide my students with the best possible tutoring experience.

ACT Math Tutor • +46 Subjects

I've been tutoring for roughly 5 years, in all areas of math and science. I am particularly fond of teaching chemistry, in which I hold a Master's degree. I have quite a bit of experience in teaching, as I have been a university tutor, a graduate teaching assistant, and a high school teacher. I believe tutoring is about passion and communication. If the student doesn't care about the subject, it will be very difficult for them to learn it. I strongly believe I will be able to not just teach my students anything they'd wish to learn, but also help them enjoy it and foster a desire to learn more than just what was required. Communication is key; I am always available to help via a call/text/email.
