Conversational Spanish Tutor • +5 Subjects

I migrated from Peru to America in the 80’s not knowing any English and realized the importance of being bilingual. After taking English classes and a lot of self study, I learned enough of the language to enroll in college. I got my bachelor and master’s degree in Spanish at Brooklyn College and tutoring my fellow classmates helped me pay for my tuition. Since then, I worked as a part time Spanish substitute teacher and was promoted to a full time teacher in public schools in Brooklyn. In 2013 my hard work paid off when my students got a 100 percent pass rate in their Spanish Lote Exam (the new name for Regents in Foreign Language). While I was teaching, I continued to tutor students who needed help in Spanish of all ages and grades. I have a particular student of Russian decent who I’ve been tutoring since she was in Junior High. When she went to high school, she took Spanish as her language of choice. Her teacher even thought she was Spanish because she spoke the language very well. At the present moment, I am still tutoring her in Spanish but this time, her lessons are more conversational. Due to my struggles as an immigrant, I tell all my students that it’s very important to go to college and get their education because it is something that no one can take away form you. It’s their ticket to their freedom and independence. In my spare time I practice yoga, spend time with my daughters and read books.

Anything worth great magnitude will never be easy to accomplish, but a little hard work and a couple late nights might be all you need. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing a finished project or a transcript that reflects the blood, sweat, and tears that you put into your classes. I have experienced that not only with my own classes but with students who I helped guide and tutor. I am amazed at the feats that have come with math and science and for that reason I want to share my love for those topics. There is always more to learn (especially still being an undergrad) but that is the most exciting thing about school, no matter how much you know, theres always another book to stump/amaze you. It has been my life dream to attend medical school and after an internship in Spain it is clear to me that I want to be a surgeon. Outside of that the three things I love most are learning, the outdoors, and the Boston Celtics; lucky for me science has to do with all three.

I love to watch someone get a concept for the first time.I spend time with my family, play the occasional video game, travel to see new things or try to find a book to teach me something new in my spare time. "There are a million ways to learn how atoms move!" said Mr. Jacobs, my high school chemistry teacher, who first ignited the fire for my love of learning the sciences.I am a recent graduate of the Johns Hopkins University with a major in public health, and on the pre-medical track. Currently, I am working as a clinical researcher in the biggest affiliated hospitals of Harvard medical school.I wasn't always the brightest, an all As- receiving student in class. Trust me, I really wasn't. I've been envious of those who were the smartest in class, but never imagined I could be at the top of my class when I was in middle school. I was averaging Bs mostly, and I never felt the passion to complain to my teachers to receive one additional point in the hopes of receiving a B+. I spent my days watching TV, playing games, and hanging out with my friends. But I've had a moment of change. A BIG CHANGE of my life that brought me to who I am today. With a gentle push from my mother who insisted I take the PSAT for admissions to a competitive high school with an IB program, I reluctantly gave in and took the test. On the day of the results, I couldn't find my name on the list of accepted students, to which my mom was in despair. But she was in joy when she spotted my name on the addendum list of students who were waitlisted to the program in the following weeks. My acceptance to and decision to participate in this IB program at a competitive high school was probably the best decision I made. I met great friends there, who encouraged me to try harder, study harder, and work harder towards my goal for greater achievement. Every time I was discouraged by my grade, I had family, friends, and amazing support from my teachers who encouraged me to try even harder. Until eventually, this became a habit, and my new standard. My motto is "play hard, but work harder." I want you to study hard and work hard, but I also want you to have fun, and enjoy your life. I have experience tutoring students of all age from elementary to college students. In college, I was working as a student academic advisor for lower undergraduate students who were having difficulty adjusting to college and learning intensive materials. I also tutored math, sciences, english, SAT, and TOEFL for students both through academies and private tutoring.

3rd Grade Science Tutor • +20 Subjects

As an elementary school teacher in Philadelphia, I am consistently focused on small group instructional models in my classroom to assist students in their particular area of academic instruction. Tutoring is where there are many different ways to approach and solve a problem, but the most important part is meeting a particular goal. Breaking down the focus skill, whether it be in reading, math, or science is of the utmost importance so my students can become independent learners.
