If you have a child who will be applying to an exclusive school, it makes sense to provide them with every possible advantage. Your child's ISEE scores won't be the only thing taken into consideration by admissions officials, but it will influence their decision. Keep reading to learn more about what your child will be tested on and how Varsity Tutors can help you maximize your child's test preparation efforts with a Pittsburgh ISEE course.
What does a Pittsburgh ISEE course cover?
A Pittsburgh ISEE course can help your child prepare for their ISEE no matter what level they will be taking. The individual levels of the exam are based on the grade level a student will be entering the following school year. The Upper Level ISEE is for students who will be going into grade nine. Students entering grades seven or eight will take the Middle Level ISEE. Children going into grades five or six will take the Lower Level ISEE. There are three separate levels for the Primary Level ISEE; Primary 2, Primary 3, and Primary 4. These each also corresponds to the grade a child will be moving into the following school year.
The Upper, Middle, and Lower levels of the ISEE each have the same time restrictions and subject area sections. However, the specific skills and number of questions do vary between levels.
Your child will have 35 minutes to complete the items in the Reading Comprehension section of the test. This part of the exam measures grade level appropriate skills and concepts such as vocabulary, author's intent, comparing and contrasting information, cause and effect, style, finding the main idea, identifying supporting details, organization and logic, inferring meaning, figurative and literal language, and tone.
Students have 20 minutes to finish all questions in the Verbal Reasoning portion of the ISEE. This part of the exam will assess your child's English language skills, including vocabulary, roots, suffixes, using context clues to find the meaning of a word, sentence completion, parts of speech, and prefixes.
On the Math Achievement section of the test, students are given 40 minutes to answer all questions. This portion of the ISEE will measure your child's math operation skills. Some of the topics and skills they may need to review include solving equations, integer comparison, properties of operations, estimation, using a Venn Diagram, symmetry, solving word problems, using a coordinate grid, using factors, prime factorization, working with fractions, and patterns.
Your child will have 35 minutes to answer items on the Quantitative Reasoning portion of the test. These questions will evaluate your child's grade level appropriate abilities in mathematical thinking. Some of the skills and concepts that can show up on the test include data analysis, probability, working with variables and exponents, finding the area and perimeter of a shape, algebra, fractions, percents, square roots, additions, division, numbers and operations, measurement, problem-solving, solving equations, making inferences about a data set, integers, decimals, operations involving variables, using formulas, multiplication, and subtraction.
No matter what Primary Level ISEE your child will be taking, their math and reading skills will be evaluated. This can include reading comprehension, basic math operations, and vocabulary. Primary 2 also evaluates a student's auditory comprehension skills. During this portion of the exam, the student has a passage read to them. They are then required to answer questions about what they've hard.
All levels of the ISEE also contain an ungraded Essay section. While this will not become part of your child's official ISEE score, the writing sample will be sent to any schools your child is applying. This gives admissions officials an opportunity to see how your child organizes their thoughts, their writing aptitude, and insight into their personality. Because it may contribute to the admissions decision, it's essential not to overlook this section when planning your child's ISEE test preparation strategy. This is an excellent opportunity for your child to make a great impression!
How can a Pittsburgh ISEE class help my child prepare?
A Pittsburgh ISEE class gives your child a structure academic environment as they review the subject area content appropriate for their ISEE level. All classes are held in a secure digital learning environment and are structured similarly to what you would find in a traditional classroom. This can make students feel more at ease and receptive to the review process.
Teachers deliver instructional lessons to the entire group and may then facilitate peer discussion or assign projects to help students better understand the material. If your child needs additional clarification around an assignment or concept, they can always ask an instructor for help.
You have two choices for session length. Two-week classes are great for students who want to focus exclusively on their ISEE preparation for a short period of time or who only need to review a few components. Four-week sessions give students more time to study in greater depth or to review more specific topics.
Classes are divided into individual sections, and new sections are added each week. This means it's easy to get started whenever you and your child are ready, so there's no need to wait.
No matter what skills or subject area your child needs help reviewing, they can find it in an ISEE prep class.
