The student and I worked on geometrical optics. In particular, we worked through problems dealing with thin lenses, focal lengths, images, real, upright, and inverted, and the effect of lens size (diameter) on the image brightness.

The student and I spent the session working on a vector worksheet. We went through problems and discussed the process needed to solve each one. Many of the problems boiled down to using the given information to plot vectors and form a triangle, then use geometry to fill in enough unknowns on the triangle to then use either the Law of Sines or the Law of Cosines. Much of our session was spent working on the process for solving these problems as the particular techniques used had been covered previously. The student struggled a little bit initially in using all these concepts in conjunction on a single problem, but once we had gone over several of them he was doing much better.

The student again focused on her upcoming final. We created many problems in all sections: work, force, power relations, velocity-acceleration, energy in all their forms, and mechanical, potential, and kinetic energy.

We covered several different concepts. The unifying theme was vectors, and specifically we discussed problems in relative motion, impulse, and force. The student needed help with both, concepts and examples, but was receptive and seemed to have understood the material after explanations from alternative viewpoints and illustrative, real-world examples. He is making progress, but he will need more practice, which we will be having this weekend.

The student and I reviewed for his final exam of the year that covered electrical circuits and the properties. He had been reviewing the material for several weeks in class, and only needed some practice and experience to build a high confidence.

In this session, the student and I covered a lot of material. He had recently taken a quiz, which he received a B- on, which I consider a victory as it was on thermal physics, a subject that is difficult and one which he particularly struggled with. His teacher gave him a copy of the quiz and his answers, so we spent the first part of our session reviewing the questions he answered incorrectly. It seemed as though the more conceptual questions were what he struggled with the most, which is very common on this particular topic, but I was happy to see he had correctly answered the problems that required applying the equations and organizing many pieces of information to answer questions that had numerous steps involved. The second part of our session was spent addressing the new material, mainly density and properties of solids. We reviewed a homework assignment he had been given and I gave him a few extra questions to help him gain a more robust understanding.
