If your student will be taking the ISEE soon, it could be an excellent idea to learn more about Milwaukee ISEE preparation options offered by Varsity Tutors. We provide private tutoring, classes that run over a two-week or four-week period, or a combination of both. We can help you figure out what will best meet your student's particular needs. Both classroom and individual lessons take place live online, so your student has the same advantages as being in a classroom or one-to-one tutoring setting, while still having the convenience of attending from virtually any location, even if your family is on holiday at the time.
The ISEE, or Independent School Entrance Exam, is widely accepted, and it's seen as a valuable tool that provides precise information for admissions officials at private and independent schools to review. There are six different test levels based on the grade your student will be entering, broken into two "tiers" of three tests each. All levels evaluate grade-appropriate reading, writing, and math skills. There's no guarantee your student will be accepted at the school of their choice if they do well on the ISEE, but it can certainly can't hurt.
What can Milwaukee ISEE prep cover?
The ISEE tests students on the core academic skills they learn during their primary and secondary school years. The Upper, Middle, and Lower Level ISEE exams are one "tier" and they're basically the same test except for the grade-level complexity of the questions asked. The same is true of the three Primary Levels. We'll take a look at the Upper, Middle, and Lower Levels first.
Each level's Verbal Reasoning section contains 40 questions to be finished in 20 minutes. Questions on vocabulary and parts of speech, synonyms and sentence completion, and discerning the meaning of words using various Latin, Greek, and Anglo-Saxon suffixes, prefixes, and roots are used to assess your student's English skills.
The Reading Comprehension sections allow students 35 minutes to finish 36 questions. Students must pick out the main ideas and purpose of a piece, find relevant supporting data, describe how effective it is, use the evidence in a passage to answer questions about the subject, infer information not explicitly stated in the piece.
The Quantitative Reasoning section has a focus on the type of thinking involved in math and requires students to answer 37 questions in 35 minutes. The Math Achievement is more focused on actual mathematical operation skills and gives students 40 minutes to complete 47 questions. Both sections require the use of basic math, algebra, geometry, and some trigonometry to answer questions correctly.
For the Writing sample, students will respond to a prompt about a topic relevant to students at their particular grade level. Within 30 minutes, they have to read the prompt, organize their response, and write their Essay using English conventions like grammar and punctuation. Their response is read by admissions boards at the schools where they apply in order to learn about their creativity and personality, along with their written skills.
The Primary Level ISEE is separated into three tests: Primary 2, 3, and 4. The numbers represent the grade the student will be attending the following year. These three also test the same subjects at the student's current grade level. The one distinction is that the Primary 2 test has a short Audio Comprehension section. The Reading and Math sections consist of multiple-choice questions on basic, age-appropriate skills in these areas.
Primary students are also asked to create a Writing sample, which in this case is a response to a visual prompt. They write a story about the picture using their best spelling and grammar. The Writing sample isn't scored, but it is provided to the schools they apply to in order to give them an impression of each student's writing ability, creativity, and personality.
These are the subjects reviewed whether your student's in a Milwaukee ISEE prep course or taking private tutoring lessons. You can depend on their tutor or instructor to supply exhaustive coverage of all material tested on the ISEE, in addition to some other test-taking strategies that are useful when they take the exam.
How do I decide which Milwaukee ISEE prep option to choose for my student?
The first thing to look at is which option your student is interested in. Often, they have a good idea of what's going to work best for them. Still, it might be a good idea to think about these other factors before making a final decision.
Most students are better at either mathematical type skills or English and reading type skills. If your student favors one but is somewhat even in their ability to answer basic questions in each of them, they could benefit from a virtual classroom setting. If their abilities are extremely different, working with a tutor who can focus on what your student's needs is probably a good plan. There is far more opportunity for a tutor to customize your student's Milwaukee ISEE prep sessions so the focus is always on their unique set of needs.
Another thing to consider is what energizes your student. If working with classmates gives them more confidence and motivation to learn, online ISEE classes are an attractive option. What if your student feels the need to work with a professional instructor and classmates, and also struggles in one area far more than the others? The answer is simple. Enroll in the ISEE prep course, and also let Varsity Tutors know that you'll want to sign up for some individual tutoring time. In this way, we can provide the most holistic ISEE test preparation experience possible for your student.
How can I sign my student up for one of these Milwaukee ISEE prep options?
Varsity Tutors strives to make enrolling in classroom or tutoring session easy. Simply contact us and provide a few details regarding your child's needs and your family's schedule, and our educational advisors will get them enrolled in a Milwaukee ISEE prep class or signed up to meet with a Milwaukee ISEE tutor as soon as possible.

I am a retired elementary school teacher. I taught for the past 15 years in grades 3-6. I currently hold a Wisconsin State Teaching Licence for grades 1-6, and have completed a Master's Degree in Education in 2010. I enjoy working one-on-one with children and helping them reach their goals. ... Reading comprehension starts with understanding that reading requires more than just decoding words. It involves making meaning from the text. In order to do this, students must understand that if they lose their focus while reading, they must reread to understand. This requires them to monitor their thinking as they read. Some strategies for helping students that understand and practice this skill involve the use of marking the text in some way while they read. I like to use "think sheets" or post-it notes. Here, students record their thoughts, questions and connections to what they are reading. Reading with a question in mind is also a strategy used by good readers. It gives the reading a purpose and keeps the reader focused. Inference skills are especially important in reading comprehension, so the attention to bringing a student's background knowledge to their reading becomes essential, as it is this background knowledge that is drawn upon to help the reader understand new vocabulary and bring deeper meaning to the text. Modeling and practicing fluency and expression is also vital to growth in reading comprehension. This can be done by a partner reading with the student and having them read some of the text orally.

...an elementary school teacher. I love to teach, and am very focused on the idea of a differentiated classroom that works for all students and types of intelligences. This carries over into tutoring, and I am all for approaching content in different ways in order to find the best fit for my students.... The most important thing for me is an individualized curriculum. Learning is not a one size fits all process, so differentiation is imperative. In order to best help a student, it is important to be aware of what motivates them, and the ways they learn best. Getting to know my students is a strength of mine, and something that helps build a successful relationship between a teacher (or tutor) and their student.

...with individuals. English, literature, and writing are the three areas that I have the most experience and fun teaching. When I am not in the classroom or tutoring, I am hiking in the bluffs of Wisconsin or chasing after my young son. I also enjoy reading historical fiction novels and traveling to historical sites.... One of the greatest pleasures in teaching is achieving a strong level of mutual trust; when a struggling student opens up and feels a sense of worth, real academic achievement can occur. Many students need different opportunities for educational growth: mainly one-on-one attention. This allows a teacher to recognize and nurture the multiple intelligences of each student and then discover approaches that have yielded previous success. Being an effective educator means being flexible enough to take risks and try fresh, creative approaches to new challenges.
